Paris Baguette is not the kind of place I typically feature on a craft coffee site. But the pastry case at the N. Scottsdale Rd. location nearl Kierland stopped me in my tracks and I decided to make an exception. Some things just earn their way onto the list.
This location pulls a lively crowd and for good reason. The pastry and sandwich case here is a serious operation. Croissants, fruit and custard pastries, sweet buns and more, all lined up and asking for your attention. The best move is to grab a latte from the Lavazza-powered espresso bar and just wander the case until something speaks to you. Something will speak to you.
The coffee is traditional Italian-leaning, smooth and low acidity. It is built for pairing with something sweet rather than standing alone as a single-origin showcase. In this context that is exactly right. A cappuccino and a fruit pastry in a stylish room with good energy around you is a perfectly solid way to spend part of your day.
The Scottsdale location hums with foot traffic and has a lively browsable energy that makes it fun just to be in. Not every visit needs to be a quiet work session. Sometimes you just want something delicious in a nice room. Paris Baguette on Scottsdale Rd delivers that every time.

Located in Cave Creek, The Village Coffee Shop is a cozy and charming local cafe specializing in an extensive menu of sweet and savory crepes. In addition to their popular crepes, they offer a variety of breakfast and lunch items, including bagels and quiche. The shop serves a full espresso bar menu using organic beans sourced from the local Roastery of Cave Creek.

Located on the serene campus of Valley Presbyterian Church, Awaken Cafe offers a bright and spacious environment that is open to the public. The cafe features a large beautifully designed indoor space that flows onto a peaceful patio with a grassy lawn and play equipment for children. The menu includes a full selection of espresso drinks, cold brew, and teas, alongside breakfast items like burritos, bagels, and pastries.

Here is a question for you. What happens when a guy comes home from the Peace Corps with two college degrees, a passport full of stamps and a strange love for tiny meat pies? You get Squarz. But hold that thought, because we will come back to the founder later.
First, the room. This is one of those rare cafes where you can settle in for three hours and never feel like you are overstaying. The ceilings are high. The walls are covered in art. There are tables, there are cozy booths and there is plenty of sofa seating. The whole place gives you room to breathe which is not common.
The signature move here is the square croissant. Squarz bakes them in house alongside savory mini pies and they take those square croissants and use them as sandwich bread. Yes, the croissant is the bread. More on why that matters in a second.
I ordered the Avocado Egg and Parmesan sandwich. It arrived beautifully presented inside one of those square croissants, fresh and hot. Creamy avocado meets a warm fried egg. Sharp parmesan brings a salty bite and a subtle crunch. Every bite balances rich texture and clean flavor all held together by a flaky and buttery square croissant. This thing is excellent. We also grabbed the Chicken Chipotle. Tender chicken, bold chipotle sauce and that same buttery croissant doing the heavy lifting. Also excellent.
Now the coffee. Squarz runs a full espresso bar with smoothies and other fun drinks. They recently switched beans from Cartel to Prism Coffee Lab, pulling the Uplift Blend, a medium-dark mix of Central and South American coffees. They also adjust shot counts by cup size to keep things balanced which is a nice touch. I had a small latte. It was fine. Balanced, a little thin and the promised milk chocolate and plum notes did not show up for me. It tasted like a typical perfectly drinkable latte and not much more. The Honey Lavender Latte was the better pour. Sweet from the honey, soft floral lavender, soothing aroma, though the coffee itself stays in the background. Fair warning for purists. The syrups here are commercial (I call them chemistry syrups), there is no house made stuff and there is no drip coffee at all. The espresso machine, on the other hand, is a treat. It is an Italian made Nuova Simonelli Prontobar semi-automatic.
So back to that founder. Steven Gerner finished the Peace Corps at 22 with two degrees and a head full of travel through South America, South Africa, and New Zealand. Somewhere along the way he fell for the little meat pies, the ones he thinks are fun and a bit silly. He started small at the Gilbert farmers market, expanded to Mesa and kept growing. He even customizes pastries for the moment, like a red croissant made to support local high school teachers. That playful and "keep it fun" spirit is all over this place.
Squarz is a comfy, art filled Scottsdale hang where the croissant is the main character and honestly, that is reason enough to go.

You've just found Scottsdale's BEST kept pastry secret! How does a coffee shop tucked inside a Kierland corporate building manage to feel more luxurious than most standalone cafes? LUX Max Annex answers that question the moment you step through its dedicated corner entrance. This is not your typical office building coffee stop. This is a carefully crafted escape that somehow transforms corporate anonymity into something unexpectedly intimate and refined.
The space itself defies expectations. Dark interiors create a moody atmosphere softened by gorgeous light fixtures throughout (even the ceiling lamp in the bathroom deserves attention). Canvas paintings and beautiful artwork line the walls. The result is a trendy hideaway that feels like an insider secret. Despite the Saturday late morning crowd, noise levels stay surprisingly low. The seating invites you to settle in with plush comfort. Soft music plays in the background without demanding attention.
LUX Max takes their coffee seriously. They roast their beans at their Central Ave. location. The Guatemala single origin beans powers their pour-overs and slow bar offerings... I know what your thinking but hear me out, while pour over is limited to one bean choice (at the time of this review), having a slow bar option at all is refreshing when most shops cut them out completely and only focus on volume serving! Everything else (espresso drinks included) gets crafted from their own house blend. The result is consistently excellent coffee that earns high marks.
The pastries here are truly world class. Pastry chef Katie makes everything fresh daily on-site. Desserts are clearly a big thing here. You will see lots of people settling down to enjoy the muffins and other baked goods. Croissants arrive flaky and buttery. Scones and coffee cake are incredible. For something more substantial, breakfast burritos and lunch sandwiches provide satisfying options.
Seating options spread generously throughout. Cozy indoor nooks invite you to settle in. A long table accommodates laptop workers who need space. Two outdoor areas provide plenty of room to enjoy your coffee outside when weather permits. The outdoor patio setup gives you options whether you want sun or shade.
Practical touches add convenience. Several EV Blink charging stations sit in the parking lot with dedicated spaces. You can charge while you caffeinate. The location makes it easy to drop in without the usual coffee shop parking struggles.
LUX Max Annex proves that great coffee culture can thrive anywhere (even on corporate ground). The attention to detail in everything from bean sourcing to decor creates an experience that feels special without trying too hard. This place should not work as well as it does. But somehow the combination of quality coffee, inviting atmosphere, and unexpected luxury hits perfectly.

Inner Circle Cafe is a cozy neighborhood cafe in Scottsdale with a focus on fresh and locally sourced ingredients. The menu features a wide array of breakfast and lunch items, including various toasts, salads, sandwiches, and breakfast burritos. Berdena's is one of those places that just makes sense where it is. It sits in the 5th Avenue Shops in Old Town Scottsdale, right in the middle of galleries and boutiques and the kind of streets you actually want to walk around. Getting a coffee here is only half the point. The other half is everything around it.
Jonathan Madrigal opened Berdena's in 2017 after moving to the U.S. from Costa Rica. The shop is bright and airy inside with floral wallpaper, Parisian-style tiling and a baby blue Synesso espresso machine that somehow ties the whole room together. Seating is limited and fills up fast on weekends so if the weather is cooperating, grab a spot on the pet-friendly outdoor patio.
Berdena's runs a multi-roaster program rotating beans from places like Ritual Coffee out of San Francisco and Morgon Coffee Roasters from Sweden. The lineup changes, so there is always a reason to come back. If you want something beyond a straight espresso drink, the Honey Lavender and Cardamom Rose lattes are made with house syrups and worth trying.
The food is no afterthought either. The avocado toast has picked up "Best of Phoenix" recognition and the breakfast sandwich is a legitimate local favorite. If you are in Old Town and skipping breakfast here, you are making a mistake.
Berdena's has been around since 2017 and the following it has built is well earned. It is the kind of neighborhood coffee shop that Old Town Scottsdale is lucky to have.

As one of the city's original specialty roasters, they have perfected the art of roasting their own beans, which shines through in every cup. The espresso is consistently smooth and rich, making their lattes a reliable go-to, but you can't talk about Lola without mentioning their iconic Lola Cola, a surprisingly refreshing mix of Mexican Coke and espresso that you just have to try at least once.
The vibe? It's pure neighborhood coffee shop, unpretentious, welcoming, and always buzzing with a mix of regulars and newcomers. It's the perfect spot to meet up with a friend or settle in with your laptop for a few hours, grabbing a fresh pastry to go with your drink. If you're looking for a no-fuss cafe that consistently delivers fantastic, locally-roasted coffee in a genuinely relaxed and cozy setting, Lola should be at the top of your list.

Located within a mixed martial arts and jiu-jitsu training center, Red Hawk's Java House offers a focused menu of espresso drinks in a unique and energetic environment. The shop proudly serves coffee using freshly roasted beans from Press Roastery and features a selection of house-made syrups. In addition to coffee, the menu includes breakfast burritos, sourdough toast, and protein shakes, catering to its active clientele.

Boyer Bakery is a family owned bakery and cafe at 13681 N Litchfield Rd in Surprise. This is their main location where all the baked goods are made in house and sent to their second location on Cotton Ln.
I will be upfront. Boyer Bakery is not a craft coffee shop. I almost did not include it on this site. But the Surprise area does not have many specialty coffee options and Boyer does have a La Marzocco espresso machine on the counter. So here we are.
For espresso they source beans from Espressions Coffee Roastery and use the House Blend which is dark roasted. When I found that out I opted out of trying the coffee. My regular readers know how I feel about dark roasts. Not everyone shares my obsession with light roast single origin beans though (most normal people do not) so if you enjoy a darker cup you will probably be perfectly happy here. The La Marzocco is a solid machine but it lacks pressure profiling which means it runs at a fixed 9 bars throughout the entire shot. That works perfectly fine for dark roasted beans (which is exactly what they are using) but it would struggle to properly extract a light roast. So if you enjoy darker coffee the pairing actually works out.
They also serve a full menu of espresso drinks alongside breakfast sandwiches, bagels and lunch items.
The space has a modern farmhouse look with two-room setup indoor seating. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was crowded and noisy.
The bakery menu is extensive. They bake almost everything in house (pastries, scones, cookies and gluten free and vegan options) with the exception of the bread which they source from a local baker. We bought some desserts and muffins to take home. They were fine but nothing that stood out. Below what I expected given the reputation.
Boyer Bakery is a solid neighborhood bakery with a big menu and a loyal following in Surprise. If you are in the area and specialty coffee is what you are after, this is probably not the destination. But if you want a pastry with a coffee on the side, Boyer will do the job.

Perfectly situated with a beautiful patio overlooking the city's famous fountain, Fountain View Coffee is a true jewel in Fountain Hills. The shop serves consistently excellent organic coffee from local roaster Cactus Licker. Skilled baristas craft perfectly balanced espresso drinks. Beyond the classics, the menu features creative seasonal lattes and a fantastic selection of delicious in-house baked goods that receive rave reviews. The atmosphere is bright and modern matched by incredibly friendly service that makes every visit a delight. For a reliably superb coffee experience in a stunning location, a visit to this cafe is absolutely essential.

Every city has that one spot where the coffee shop is barely the point. Or maybe it is the point. Or maybe the point is whatever you want it to be that day. dialog is that spot in Phoenix. It sits in Roosevelt Row, and it is built for lingering.
Walking in feels like stepping into a creative's paradise. Polished concrete floors. Sharp modern furniture. The ceiling is left bare on purpose and a few well placed plants quietly hold their ground against the desert sun outside. There is local art on the walls. There are books on the shelves (more on that in a second). The whole place feels meticulously curated without feeling stuffy.
About the books. dialog has a small library section. Premium fashion monographs, visual design histories and counterculture art books. The kind of coffee table editions you flip through and immediately want to own. A real niche little area.
The coffee program is serious. Beans come from Stereoscope out of Los Angeles and the espresso rotates through single origins from Colombia, Ecuador, Rwanda and Brazil. Order an espresso drink for here and it arrives in proper glassware with sparkling water on the side. That is the subtle tell of a shop that actually cares. You can also get ceremonial grade matcha, organic loose leaf tea and a pastry case full of scones and baked things from local makers.
The back of the shop opens into a greenhouse area that spills into the building's lobby atrium. It is one of the more pleasant places in town to post up with a laptop. Sometimes there are flowers for sale. And if you fall in love with a chair or a desk while you are there, dialog sells furniture too (through their website, last I checked).
