Manual Lever Espresso Coffee Shops in Arizona

Manual Lever Espresso Coffee Shops in Arizona

Manual lever espresso machines are rare and highly specialized. Instead of using automated pressure, these machines rely on a hand pulled lever, giving baristas full control over the espresso shot.

Only a few coffee shops in Arizona use manual lever machines. Here is where you can find them.

Jerome
Desert Grave Espresso is the kind of coffee shop I want people to stumble into and then tell their friends about later. It sits in Jerome with that slightly offbeat mountain town energy that makes the whole visit feel a little more fun than a normal coffee run. Getting there is part of the experience. I come in usually from the south on Highway 89A and the road earns its reputation fast. Tight curves and switchbacks climb around Mingus Mountain and a few miles before Jerome the views open up into something that is impressive. Clarkdale sits in the valley below. Old mining ruins cling to the hillsides all around you. Pictures do not do it justice. Just go and experience it for yourself. Jerome itself carries a specific kind of history. It was once a booming copper metropolis of 15,000 people. When the mines closed in the 1950s it nearly emptied out completely dropping to fewer than 100 residents. That collapse is where the ghost town reputation comes from. The Jerome Grand Hotel (a former hospital where thousands of miners reportedly died) still clings to the side of Cleopatra Hill today and is keeping that legacy alive with well documented hauntings. All of that history is present in the air when you walk around town. Desert Grave Espresso fits right into it. The shop is tucked inside the New State Motor Co. building down the stairs. It has that compact tucked away charm that works so well in a place like Jerome. The space has a cactus theme with vibrant earthy colors that feel inviting. The shop is the creation of Ezra and Jeneisha. Her ceramic work is displayed alongside the coffee bar and there is a variety of craft items and merch for sale. A small couch by a window overlooking the valley is exactly where you want to sit. Ezra treats coffee as an art form. You can see the pride he takes from extraction to presentation. He pulls espresso shots on a Flair 58 Plus, a manual lever machine, which is exactly the kind of setup that caught my attention and made me want to make the drive from Phoenix. A lever machine puts full control in the hands of the barista. Pressure, timing and technique all fall on the person pulling the shot. When it is done right (and here it is) the result is espresso that tastes unmistakably human. Smooth, balanced and just plain pleasant. Nothing fussy. Nothing overcomplicated. The flavors from the beans came through really well. They also offer house made syrups if you want to go that route. Coffee enthusiasts will be right at home here. But honestly so will everyone else. Jerome deserves a coffee shop this good... Turns out it has one. 👉Click to View the Drink Menu Note: Menu items are subject to change. Some items could be seasonal and may not be available. Gilbert
Downtown Gilbert just got a coffee shop built by parents who were tired of having nowhere good to take their kids. Villa Meola Coffee is that place and it is worth the trip. Michael and Callen Meola are the couple behind it. Before this shop existed, they spent years searching for places with enough space for their two young daughters to roam around without anyone losing their mind. Instead of just accepting that nothing quite fit, they built the place they always wanted. The name "Villa Meola" is what they always called their own home. The whole idea is that you feel invited the same way a friend would invite you over. Walking around the space, you get that. They ended up partnering with Mario Cimmino of Gelato Cimmino, the authentic Italian gelato shop right there in Downtown Gilbert. The two businesses now share the space which gives the whole place a strong Italian character that goes well beyond the menu. And speaking of Italian character, the espresso here comes out of an Astoria machine with a manual lever. There are maybe a handful of shops in all of Arizona running human powered manual levers. Unlike modern pump-driven machines, the lever puts the extraction entirely in the hands of the barista. It is harder to master but produces a creamy texture that a pump-driven machine simply struggles to replicate. Even the pressure profiler expensive machiens with all the fancy electronics strugle to replicate a pull like a human would. The beans are from Momentto Coffee roasters and is a medium roasted blend with a full body and zero bitterness. That combination shows in the cup. The drinks are named after Italian classics. Limoncello, Cannoli, Caffe Forza, Spumoni. We got the Spumoni, named after the molded Italian gelato. It is deeply chocolatey with pistachio pieces at the bottom and a subtle cherry note running underneath. If the cherry had a bit more presence, this drink would be almost unfairly good. We also got the Cannoli Latte, which uses house made almond milk and actual cannoli cream on top in place of cold foam. Gentle cinnamon notes, everything done right. All drinks come out half sweet by default, which is the right call. Every drink also arrives with a small piece of biscotti (noticeably better than anything from a store shelf). You can buy extra pieces and you probably should. They are that good! The space is big. There is indoor and outdoor seating, a large patio with umbrellas, a play area for kids and a little iron fence around the patio with a self closing gate so the kiddos do not wander into the street. There are books, games and plenty of reasons for a small kid to stay happily occupied while you actually enjoy your drink. Gilbert needed a spot like this. A family friendly space with genuinely great coffee, Italian inspired drinks and gelato all under the same roof is not something you just stumble across. The Meolas built exactly what they were looking for. As it turns out, a lot of other people were looking for the same thing. 👉Click to View the Drink Menu Note: Menu items are subject to change. Esso Coffeehouse is a hidden neighborhood roastery on 12th Street near Highland in Phoenix with a vine covered patio and in house roasted beans. The space sits on the lower level of its building tucked behind native foliage and greenery that grows along the side across from the glass panes. The plants provide a natural screen from the sun and shade the outdoor seating area. Tables and chairs are spread comfortably beneath the cover. The whole entrance has a modern yet tucked away feel that makes it easy to walk right past if you do not know it is there. Inside, the layout is narrow with industrial exposed ducting overhead and warm ambient lighting. A beautiful geometric patterned tiling wraps the service counter and creates a focal point against the rustic wooden tables and concrete floors. It is cozy and unpretentious. The kind of room that feels right for a long quite study session or a slow morning with a friend. The menu covers espresso drinks, specialty lattes, matcha, cold brew and some food items including pastries and breakfast and lunch options. One popular drink is the Honey Lavender Latte. For hot drinks they offer three sizes. Small and medium come with a double shot of espresso while the large gets two doubles. One reason I had high hopes walking into Esso was the espresso machine. They use a Victoria Arduino Athena Leva. This is a lever machine where the barista physically pulls down a heavy handle to compress an internal spring. When the lever is pulled down, hot water from the boiler floods the chamber and soaks the coffee puck (this stage is the pre infusion). The barista can hold the lever for a few seconds to make sure the grounds are fully saturated. When the handle is released the spring engages and begins the high pressure extraction (usually around 9 bars). As the spring slowly expands and the lever returns to its resting position the pressure gradually declines. This declining pressure profile is the signature of the Athena Leva. The lower pressure at the end of the pull prevents bitter oils from being extracted as the coffee puck degrades. Most pump driven machines (with the exception of pressure profiling models) apply a constant 9 bars throughout the entire shot. The natural decline of a lever machine is superior because the grounds need less pressure during the second half of the extraction to maintain consistent flow. Esso roasts their beans in house using a blend of Guatemalan, Brazilian and Tanzanian beans. The roast level runs dark. If you enjoy bold and heavy coffee with a strong roasted character you will feel right at home here. But if you are someone who prefers lighter roasts where the natural origin flavors of the bean come through (fruit, floral, citrus) you will likely find that the dark roast masks those qualities. The Athena Leva is designed to bring out subtle differences in extraction and protect the more delicate flavors in the cup. A lighter roast would let that machine really show what it can do. With a dark roast profile those technical advantages of this marvelous machine are lost. My wife ordered the April Showers Latte from the spring menu. The flavor was good and it was well mixed from top to bottom. Not too sweet and nicely balanced overall. But after the drink was finished the dark roast made itself known. There was a lingering charcoal aftertaste that sat on the palate. If you are used to lighter coffee (as we are) you will notice it. If you prefer darker roasts this will probably taste exactly like what you are looking for. Esso Coffeehouse has a lot going for it. The atmosphere is genuinely charming. The patio is nice. The team is warm and the drink menu has personality. I just wish the roast level gave that beautiful lever machine a chance to show off. A lighter roast on those beans would turn this place into something really special. The bones are all there. 👉Click to View the Drink Menu Note: Menu items are subject to change. Located within the Pueblo plant shop, Caffio Espresso Bar offers a unique coffee counter experience set on a lush garden patio. This hidden gem centers on classic espresso drinks on lever espresso machines while featuring a selection of creative specialty lattes (the Il Caffioso with Mexican chile and the L'ape Lavender Latte are standouts). See full menu below. The shop provides a small assortment of pastries and a truly unique and relaxing atmosphere surrounded by plants. What makes this spot particularly special is the story behind the counter. Owner Anthony Fiorelli founded the business as a tribute to his Italian heritage, operating the bar out of a vintage 1985 VespaCar (Piaggio Ape) parked right inside the shop. It is a beautiful blend of traditional Italian coffee culture and a modern desert oasis. Between the greenery and the authentic vibe of the Vespa, it is a perfect place to slow down and enjoy a carefully crafted cup. A full review is forthcoming. Every once in a while you find a coffee shop tucked into a quiet strip mall right off the freeway. You walk in expecting nothing and you leave with a story. Williams Coffee Co. is that, basically a stone's throw from the I-17 exit and sitting in one of those calm shopping centers that feel like they are minding their own business. Inside is a book nook (with books for sale), fresh muffins on the counter and some of the friendliest folks you could ask for on a random morning. Williams roasts their own beans which I always respect. And they pull shots on a Victoria Arduino Leva, which is a beautiful piece of hardware and frankly a bit of a flex for a small neighborhood shop. So I ordered a small latte and expected good things. My latte was a swing and a miss. It felt unbalanced and the espresso came through a touch bitter and flat. I am going to point my finger at the roaster machine on this one. Williams roasts on a US Roaster Corp machine that is heavily manual. This means that the operator is dialing heat and airflow second by second with no automated profile replication. When it works, it works. When it does not, you get batch to batch swings, and my cup felt like one of those swings. The espresso is a blend (nobody on shift knew what goes in it) and it reads somewhere between medium and medium dark. The single origin bags on the shelf might tell a different story, and I would have loved to grab one and see for myself I I was not already loaded with beans at home. As for pastries, everything in the case was on the darker, whole grain side of life. That is not really my world (I am a buttery/golden brown kind of guy) but I respect it. If you are the type of person who wants a muffin with actual substance and a little fiber in your morning, you are going to be very happy here. The vibe though? Williams nails it. Every single person working was warm and welcoming, and that goes a long way. The bones are good and the hospitality is real. With some tightening up on the roast side, this place could really sing. ▶Click to View the Drink Menu Note: Menu items are subject to change. Some items could be seasonal and may not be available.
