The Ultimate Urban Desert Coffee Experience

Tempe is home to Arizona State University and a massive student population. This makes it one of the most walkable cities in the valley. Coffee shops here function as much more than places to grab a drink. They are community hubs and study sanctuaries. Do you need a place with ample seating and power outlets? Are you looking for an authentic local experience? I have a great recommendation for you. I am sharing my favorite spots below.

My Top 3 Favorite Coffee shops in Tempe

Infusion Coffee & Tea

Infusion Coffee and Tea Crafters stands apart as a local institution. The focus here is pure and unadulterated knowledge of coffee. The owner travels the world to source green beans and train baristas. You will get a flawless drink whether you order a simple drip or a complex single origin pour over.

The menu features a massive list of brewing methods (V60, Chemex, Aeropress, French Press, Syphon, Ibrik and Moka Pot). They also serve fun signature drinks like the Spro. This is a surprising mix of espresso and orange juice.

The cafe is often bustling with people. Finding a seat during peak hours can be a competitive sport. Parking out front is sometimes challenging. I recommend checking the large alley with ample parking just behind the building.

Aden Coffee House

You should head straight to Aden Coffee House in Tempe if you want something different. This place delivers authentic Yemeni coffee culture right near the ASU campus. The space features lovely Arabian decor and warm lighting.

The drinks are immaculate. You must try the signature Latte with Yemeni spices. You can also order finely ground Turkish coffee with cardamom. I highly recommend trying their Middle Eastern pastries like basbusa and pistachio bites.

The location makes it a major hangout for university students. Aden stays open until 9:00 PM on week days and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. This makes it a popular late night cafe in the valley.

Shaghf Cafe

Shaghf Cafe is a cozy Middle Eastern inspired coffeehouse. It has quickly become a favorite hangout for locals and late night caffeine seekers. The space is inviting and perfect for meeting friends or unwinding to live music.

The coffee beans are sourced from organic single origin beans grown in Guatemala. The roasting process is carefully controlled to ensure quality and flavor integrity. You will find local artists performing or even a karaoke night on most weekends.

Did I mention the desserts? They offer everything from delicate crepes to viral Dubai chocolate. Best of all Shaghf Cafe is open late. You can still grab an espresso or latte well after 11 PM. This is perfect for a student pulling an all nighter.

The Best Coffee Shops in Tempe

Tempe’s coffee culture is tied directly to the city’s active outdoor life. Visitors grab a coffee or cold brew before hiking the iconic “A” Mountain (Hayden Butte) or enjoying water sports like kayaking on Tempe Town Lake. These businesses are cultural anchors that frequently host local events, live music and art displays. They are also the perfect starting point before diving into a night out on Mill Avenue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tempe Coffee Shops

I love the diverse local scene here. You will find great specialized spots like Cafetal Coffee. They feature a pure crop-to-cup Colombian mission. I also recommend Shaghf Cafe for authentic Arab inspired specialty coffee from Dubai. They boast a slow bar with advanced brewing methods. You must also visit Cafe Cortez. A third generation Costa Rican farmer founded this welcoming shop. They maintain direct relationships with farmers and roast beans right here in Tempe. I highly recommend ordering their traditional Costa Rican Vandola pour over.

Students have great options close to the Arizona State University campus. Aden Coffee House is a very short walk away. They serve authentic Yemeni drinks and stay open late. Laymoon Cafe is another great destination. They mix Middle Eastern traditions with modern espresso. I also recommend checking out Honey 2 A Bee Coffee & Crepes. They serve sweet treats and specialty lattes. Shaghf Cafe is another excellent late night spot near campus. They pour organic coffee and serve fun desserts (like viral Dubai chocolate). I love visiting all of these places.

Follow this dedicated page for late night coffee shops. Here are just a few examples:

Tempe has a great selection of serious craft coffee destinations. You can find artisanal pour overs at local spots like Press Coffee and Cartel Roasting Co. I highly recommend visiting them if you love specialty beans.

You have two fantastic options near campus. King Coffee is a cozy and charming local shop situated right near the ASU campus. It offers a chill and laid back atmosphere. You will find comfortable seating nooks and a very friendly vibe. I recommend ordering a classic espresso drink and a breakfast burrito while you study.

You must also visit Cartel Roasting Co on Ash Ave. This famous local roaster offers plenty of space and a bright aesthetic. They roast their beans right in house. I like ordering a single origin pour over and finding a quiet corner to work. Both of these spots are perfect for students looking to read or relax over a cup of coffee.
