The Boyer Bakery

Boyer Bakery is a family owned bakery and cafe at 13681 N Litchfield Rd in Surprise. This is their main location where all the baked goods are made in house and sent to their second location on Cotton Ln.

I will be upfront. Boyer Bakery is not a craft coffee shop. I almost did not include it on this site. But the Surprise area does not have many specialty coffee options and Boyer does have a La Marzocco espresso machine on the counter. So here we are.

For espresso they source beans from Espressions Coffee Roastery and use the House Blend which is dark roasted. When I found that out I opted out of trying the coffee. My regular readers know how I feel about dark roasts. Not everyone shares my obsession with light roast single origin beans though (most normal people do not) so if you enjoy a darker cup you will probably be perfectly happy here. The La Marzocco is a solid machine but it lacks pressure profiling which means it runs at a fixed 9 bars throughout the entire shot. That works perfectly fine for dark roasted beans (which is exactly what they are using) but it would struggle to properly extract a light roast. So if you enjoy darker coffee the pairing actually works out.

They also serve a full menu of espresso drinks alongside breakfast sandwiches, bagels and lunch items.

The space has a modern farmhouse look with two-room setup indoor seating. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was crowded and noisy.

The bakery menu is extensive. They bake almost everything in house (pastries, scones, cookies and gluten free and vegan options) with the exception of the bread which they source from a local baker. We bought some desserts and muffins to take home. They were fine but nothing that stood out. Below what I expected given the reputation.

Boyer Bakery is a solid neighborhood bakery with a big menu and a loyal following in Surprise. If you are in the area and specialty coffee is what you are after, this is probably not the destination. But if you want a pastry with a coffee on the side, Boyer will do the job.
