Mesa's best kept secret: Bak & Jo blends Vietnamese cafe culture with artisan bakery and specialty coffee. Must try the pistachio cream croissant and authentic Vietnamese coffee. This welcoming gem in Mesa successfully brings together a high quality bakery, a modern coffee shop, and Vietnamese-inspired cafe under one roof. Bak & Jo source their beans from local specialty roasters such as Xanadu Coffee Co and Sagebrush which are both highly regarded in The Valley of the Sun for quality and single-origin offerings. Every espresso drink here is built on rich and flavorful coffee. While the standard coffee menu is expertly executed, their creative seasonal lattes and authentic Vietnamese coffee are standout offerings. The in-house bakery deserves equal praise with phenomenal breakfast burritos, authentic Banh Mi, and an array of delicious pastries. Their pistachio cream croissant is a revelation: buttery layers of laminated dough embracing a smooth and nutty pistachio filling that tastes luxurious without being heavy. Sweet Simon is highly rated vegan and gluten-free bakery adjacent to Bak & Jo. The unique offerings don't compromise on flavor. See why Bak & Jo is featured in my curated best coffee shops in Mesa. Phoenix
Look, Case Study Coffee in Phoenix is basically the cool kid's coffee shop. And honestly, I get why. The vibe is sophisticated and moody. The lighting is perfect. Everything is designed to make you feel like you stepped into a design magazine. Just so you know, parking can be brutal during rush hour and weekends. But here's the thing. The coffee is absolutely worth the hunt. I started with their regular latte and it was fantastic. They roast their own beans in house. You can taste the care they put into it. Then I got adventurous with the matcha latte. It was smooth and exactly what I needed on a lazy afternoon. The real conversation starter? Their Dark Horse Latte. It is one of their signature drinks. It is a little smoky with dark maple and smoked salt. It's like drinking a campfire but make it fancy. Just kidding. It was really good but fair warning though, I would order mine less sweet next time because it leans a bit heavy on the maple situation. At Case Study, they are pulling shots on a classic La Marzocco Linea. That tells you they're not messing around with their espresso game. Here is the secret nobody mentions at first. There is an awesome back room. The front has just a sofa and a few chairs. But look toward the opposite side from the ordering counter. You'll find a hallway. It leads to a decent sized room with tons of seating. Tables. Chairs. The works. Perfect if you want to actually spread out and work or hang. Case Study is where you go when you want great coffee in a space that actually gets it. To learn more about the owner's story (and the custom furniture), read my full Case Study Coffee Lounge review.

Tempe
Infusion Coffee and Tea Crafters is a serious player in Tempe. This place skips the trendy minimalist look. Its focus is on pure coffee power and knowledge. Infusion is far more than a cafe...it functions as a roastery, a training facility and a full coffee lab. This isn't your average coffee school. Infusion was the first Specialty Coffee Association (SCA Academy in the Americas). Roasters and baristas literally travel here from around the world to train, so you can trust your drink order will be executed perfectly. Here you will find emphasizes on direct trade sourcing and ethical practices as well as a commitment to high standards. Green coffee beans are roasted in-house to highlight the best flavor profiles. The slow bar is a coffee lover's dream. They specialize equally in unique teas and coffee. Try a ceremonial matcha affogato or one of their specialty lattes. You can grab whole beans to take home. The atmosphere is a beautiful mix. You'll find "bohemian eclecticism and rustic wood" throughout, creating a very calm vibe. It works as a great workspace, but be aware that parking and finding a seat can be a challenge during peak hours. For a bite, they offer sandwiches and snacks. The gluten-free bagel seems to be a popular hit. Expect high quality world-class coffee choices and the price reflects for some of these items. Just know that the investment in these specialty items reflects their premium sourcing and world-class experience compared to chain cafes. Find this knowledge hub at 1300 E 8th Street in Tempe.
