Single Speed Coffee Lab & Roastery

A room full of people studying and somehow you can still hear yourself think. That is Single Speed in a single sentence.

The place sits at 7000 feet in Flagstaff and the elevation is not just trivia. These beans are some of the freshest you will find anywhere in the state. The space around them matches the ambition. Vaulted ceilings, exposed metal trusses, warm wood against an industrial frame. Neutral walls, modern LED lighting, high wooden tables and a minimalist world map mural pull the whole thing together. Outside, a patio with striped umbrellas waits for anyone who wants their coffee in the sun.

Espresso rotates monthly and stays single origin always usually landing light to medium roast. On my visit it was a washed Costa Rica pulled on a gorgeous white La Marzocco Linea. In milk it turned into something special. Peanut butter notes blended with rich milk fat. A burnt honey sweetness settled into deep caramel on the finish. A little grape acidity stayed bright underneath the whole time. The latte landed a clean 10 out of 10, smooth from the first sip with nothing close to burnt.

I also tried the Pancake Brulee Latte. The shot was pulled beautifully and the taste was smooth with zero bitterness. My one small note is that I would have welcomed a touch more sweetness to match the name.

On the side, the Pumpkin Oatmeal Cream Pie delivered exactly what it promised. Properly pumpkin flavored with a crisp oatmeal texture holding the whole cookie together.

A couple of practical notes. Every hot espresso drink comes in a single size, so there is no large to second guess here. Syrups are the commercial kind outside of seasonal offerings.

Single Speed earns its name. Slow down, let them do the work and the cup rewards the wait.
