Most coffee shops pick a lane. Morning spot or night spot. Bakery or bar. The Grove, sitting on High Street in north Phoenix's Desert Ridge area decided to ignore that rule entirely.
High Street is a polished and walkable lifestyle district. It is the kind of place that feels curated without feeling corporate. The Grove fits that energy well. It reads less like a corner bakery and more like something that belongs in a destination. Right next door sits the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & SPA (home to one of the best golf courses in the Valley) and if you are staying there, The Grove is less than a mile walk away.
Walk in and the room does a lot of things right. The paint is light and bright. The barista bar has beautiful wood paneling. Round tables paired with elegant upholstered chairs are spread across smooth concrete floors. On one side you get booth style seating sharing tables. On the other you'll notice a long bar by the windows with stools for people who prefer to watch life go by outside. Beautiful wall lamps. Flower bouquets and roses on the tables. It is the kind of interior that makes you slow down a little before you even order.
The coffee comes from Passport Coffee and Tea which is a respected Valley roaster. For espresso drinks,Β The Grove pulls from the Portofino blend which is a medium light roast built from Ethiopian, Costa Rican, Guatemalan and Brazilian beans with caramel front and center. It showed up clearly in my latte. It was balanced and full bodied without being heavy.
For drip, the Tuscany Blend takes over. It is a medium dark roast with Central American and Indonesian beans and the tasting notes lean toward dark chocolate and caramel. I had a small drip sample and it delivered exactly that. Shots are pulled on a La Marzocca Linea which is the kind of machine serious coffee shops own.
The bakery items looked genuinely great. Croissants, muffins and more. I had made the mistake of eating a big breakfast before arriving so I had to pass. Next visit I am coming hungry!
Now. About the other thing.
Thursday through Saturday, The Grove stays open until 1:00am (as of this writing) with a Midnight Menu starting at 6pm. The espresso machine runs all the way to close. That alone makes this place unusual. But the real surprise is in the back of the shop.
Look for the phone booth.
Punch star 78 on the keypad. Push the door. You are now inside Star Seventy-Eight, a speakeasy that feels like the prohibition era decided to set up shop behind a coffee shop in north Phoenix. The space is quaint and intimate. A true speakeasy should have no signage outside and a creative way in. Star Seventy-EightΒ almost nails that down.
I visited in the morning (when I needed the caffeine the most) so I did not make it inside the the speakeasy. Plus I think it requires reservation for folks coming to it. I linked to there web site if you are interested. I will try to keep this conversation about coffee.
The Grove is doing something genuinely fun here. A bright elegant cafe by day with serious coffee and beautiful pastries. A hidden speakeasy by night with a phone booth entrance. High Street picked a good neighbor.

Cafecito in Phoenix has a menu built around Mexican coffee culture, and it earns its place among the better coffee spots in the city. It sits inside Otro Cafe tucked into the Uptown / North Central corridor close to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.
The coffee bar was born when Otro Cafe's ownership (Doug Robson and partner Carlos Diaz) knocked through a wall into the neighboring storefront. Phoenix New TimesΒ described it as a love letter to Mexican coffee culture, and that feels right. The whole thing was built to handle brunch overflow from next door, but it has grown into its own thing entirely.
The beans come from Esso Coffee, a local female owned roastery chosen for its caramel and chocolate leaning darker roast profile. The coffee is strong and well prepared. It does not try to be delicate or tea-like. It wants to be bold and it pulls that off.
The specialty drink menu is where things get fun. The horchata latte and the cajeta latte are the ones people talk about most and they are both worth trying. Cafe de olla inspired drinks and licuados round out a menu that feels genuinely connected to Mexican tradition rather than just borrowing the aesthetics.
The pastries deserve their own mention. They are made in house and are one of the best in the area. Fresh, flavorful and the kind of thing that makes it harder to say no when you are just "stopping by for a coffee".
The space itself is chill. Latin music plays, the bar seating works well for solo visits and the vibe leans relaxed rather than performative. If you live nearby, it is easy to make this becoming a regular stop. It is also a natural fit for anyone coming off a morning hike at Piestewa or up in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve area.
One thing worth knowing: if you end up here and the smell of Otro Cafe's food starts pulling at you, that is not a problem unique to you. Their pancakes have a reputation for a reason.

URBO Urban Bodega in downtown Phoenix has a menu that includes espresso drinks, iced frappes, smoothies and hot food. That opening sentence probably raised an eyebrow or two among the craft coffee crowd. Fair enough. A coffee shop inside a convenience store is not exactly the usual territory covered on this site. But URBO earns its place here and I will explain why.
First, the machine. The espresso bar runs on a two-group La Marzocco Linea. If that name means nothing to you, just know it is the same industry workhorse sitting behind the counter at many of the serious third wave shops in the Valley. Consistency, shot quality, proper milk steaming. That machine does not end up in a bodega by accident.
Second, the beans. URBO uses WeBe Swingset, a blend from the acclaimed WeBe Coffee Roasters which I reviewed separately on this site. It is a medium roast made from washed and natural processed specialty grade coffee. Tropical fruit, caramel and milk chocolate are the characteristics/notes that come through. These are real specialty and well sourced beans. The kind of thing you would find at a dedicated craft shop.
Third, and this one actually matters quite a bit: the hours. Hot espresso drinks are available until 6:30 PM. Cold brew runs all the way to 11 PM. By the time most third wave shops have flipped the sign and wiped down the portafilters, URBO is still pulling shots. For late study sessions or long work stretches downtown, that alone changes the math.
The food side covers breakfast sandwiches and fresh pizza (a Margherita or a prosciutto, if you want to make a moment of it). There is also a small front patio with a few benches where you can sit in the shade and watch the foot traffic and cars move along Fillmore St.
Is it a specialty coffee destination? No. Is it a smart, practical option with better coffee than it has any reason to serve? Absolutely. Sometimes that is exactly what you need.

Sip Coffee and Beer Garage in Phoenix feels like someone turned a service bay into a hangout and then never stopped adding reasons to stay. It is open and a little industrial but somehow still comfortable enough to disappear into your laptop for hours.
By day it is a full on coffee shop. And they are serious about it. Two La Marzocco Lineas sit behind the barista counter. Not one. Two! Maybe they needed the volume. Maybe they just really like La Marzocco. Either way, two is better than one.
Custom blends, espresso drinks and a steady stream of breakfast burritos and sandwiches keep the place humming. The drive thru adds that very Phoenix convenience so you can grab an Breakfast Burrito and a latte without leaving the car. Then circle back later to actually sit and hang out.
The patio here is genuinely beautiful. Shaded and comfortable with that Arcadia energy around you. Dog friendly too. The kind of outdoor space where you sit down for a quick coffee and look up an hour later wondering where the time went.
As evening hits, things get interesting. There is a whole cocktail lounge hiding under the cafe.
The playlists stay loud enough to feel alive but not chaotic. For a one stop Arcadia spot that covers coffee, work time and a proper night out, this place does the job without breaking a sweat.
