URBO | Urban Bodega

URBO Urban Bodega in downtown Phoenix has a menu that includes espresso drinks, iced frappes, smoothies and hot food. That opening sentence probably raised an eyebrow or two among the craft coffee crowd. Fair enough. A coffee shop inside a convenience store is not exactly the usual territory covered on this site. But URBO earns its place here and I will explain why.

First, the machine. The espresso bar runs on a two-group La Marzocco Linea. If that name means nothing to you, just know it is the same industry workhorse sitting behind the counter at many of the serious third wave shops in the Valley. Consistency, shot quality, proper milk steaming. That machine does not end up in a bodega by accident.

Second, the beans. URBO uses WeBe Swingset, a blend from the acclaimed WeBe Coffee Roasters which I reviewed separately on this site. It is a medium roast made from washed and natural processed specialty grade coffee. Tropical fruit, caramel and milk chocolate are the characteristics/notes that come through. These are real specialty and well sourced beans. The kind of thing you would find at a dedicated craft shop.

Third, and this one actually matters quite a bit: the hours. Hot espresso drinks are available until 6:30 PM. Cold brew runs all the way to 11 PM. By the time most third wave shops have flipped the sign and wiped down the portafilters, URBO is still pulling shots. For late study sessions or long work stretches downtown, that alone changes the math.

The food side covers breakfast sandwiches and fresh pizza (a Margherita or a prosciutto, if you want to make a moment of it). There is also a small front patio with a few benches where you can sit in the shade and watch the foot traffic and cars move along Fillmore St.

Is it a specialty coffee destination? No. Is it a smart, practical option with better coffee than it has any reason to serve? Absolutely. Sometimes that is exactly what you need.
