Collective Coffee

What happens when you combine church leadership experience, nonprofit community work, and a passion for quality coffee? Collective Coffee opened in March 2025 in the former Hanai Coffee space on West Southern Avenue. Juan and Tina Chavez (founders of South Phoenix church and the nonprofit AZ Reach) partnered with Aaron and Dana Daile to create something bigger than espresso and pastries. They built a genuine community hub for South Phoenix and Laveen. Look, the mission here is not subtle. Collective Coffee exists "from our community, for our community." The space directly ties into AZ Reach's mentorship programs (link below), grief support, entrepreneurship training, and financial literacy workshops for local high school students. You can feel that energy the moment you walk in. The coffee comes from a nonprofit roaster Cultivate Coffee in Sunnyslope that I reviewed last year. Collective does not roast in-house but they chose their partner carefully. The beans are solid and the espresso drinks are consistently well made. Try the Copper Latte (espresso with caramel, agave and cardamom) or the Horchata Latte if you want something beyond the standard menu. The specialty drinks menu leans creative without crossing into gimmick territory. The Tuxedo Latte has handcrafted cookies and cream sauce with crushed Oreos. That's what my wife got and I stole a few sips when she was looking away... 🙂 The drink actually tasted good. Food comes from other South Phoenix businesses. Pastries are from Red Velvet Bakery. The breakfast burrito includes house made chipotle sauce and a side of green salsa. The avocado toast on sourdough is legitimately excellent (avocado, chipotle sauce, cotija, pickled onion, cilantro, red pepper flakes, tomato). The space itself is family friendly and they even have high chairs for the little ones. There is indoor seating and bar seating. The vibe feels comfortable and lived in rather than trying too hard to be trendy. You can post up for hours without feeling rushed. Collective hosts regular community events and gatherings. This is not background noise marketing. They actually function as a neighborhood gathering spot where people know each other and the staff remembers your name (not mine because I live on the other side of town and only made it here once so far for this review, but I will definitely swing by again whenever I am in the area). South Phoenix and Laveen needed this. A real local coffee shop that invests back into the community instead of just extracting profit. The Bookish Shop in downtown Gilbert is the ultimate destination for romance readers who want a side of caffeine with their latest read. It opened its doors on April 4 2025 and has quickly established itself as a charming community hub. You will immediately notice that the drinks are a major draw here alongside the books rather than just serving as an afterthought add on. I love that the emphasis is on themed specialty drinks that match the romance and bookish aesthetic like the Death Incarnate. The cozy community vibe actually reminds me quite a bit of Revolutionary Grounds Books & Coffee in Tucson. It is so exciting to have another great coffee and books place in the Valley of the Sun to complement spots like William's Coffee Co. You should definitely keep an eye on their schedule because if you are lucky you could walk in on an author book signing. Checkout other cool coffee shops in Gilbert and the East Valley.

Lake Powell Italian Deli

Is it possible to find a slice of Italy in the middle of the Arizona desert? Lake Powell Italian Deli proves that you do not need a passport to enjoy a proper Panino di Prosciutto right here in Page. I was honestly shocked to find real imported meats from Parma and authentic gelato in a town better known for its slot canyons than its charcuterie. You can grab a bold Americano or a creamy Latte here but the real draw is definitely the food. The La Segreta sub is a massive sandwich loaded with Capocollo and Salami that will ruin fast food for you forever. I noticed they have a retail section where you can buy pasta and wine to take home which is a nice touch. The Pistachio Cannoli is filled fresh daily and tastes like the real deal rather than that sugary stuff you get at grocery stores. It is a cozy spot with a modern rustic vibe that feels miles away from the dusty trails outside. I really appreciated that the staff takes pride in their ingredients and the restroom is famously clean which is a huge plus on a road trip.

I noticed they serve some surprisingly hearty food options here including a spicy kimchi ramen bowl and burgers. You can also order a signature Sandstone Latte or try the Navajo Tea if you want a taste of local culture. The interior has a lounge vibe with plenty of outlets for road warriors who need to recharge. You should definitely plan to visit if you want to soak up the Arizona sun in a comfortable setting.

Is there anything worse than showing up for a donut only to find the display case empty? That is a real risk at Hot n Sweet Coffee and Donut Shop because the locals know to get here early. Mark and his family run this cozy spot in Page and they really make you feel like a regular the moment you walk in. I was surprised to see an arcade game in the corner which definitely adds a fun twist to your typical morning run. They brew on a robust Nuova Simonelli Appia II that cranks out strong shots for their extensive menu of flavored lattes. You have over twenty syrup options ranging from Butter Pecan to Toasted Marshmallow so you can really get creative with your order. The donuts are the main event here. They are mostly white cake style with a texture that sits right between a fluffy yeast donut and a dense cake. You should try the Fruity Pebble or the Maple Pecan if you have a sweet tooth. If you need something heavier they make massive croissant sandwiches and chorizo breakfast burritos that are made to order. It is the kind of unpretentious place where the hospitality is just as memorable as the sugar rush.

Ever wonder where you can find a latte and a lager under the same roof? Lake Powell Espresso on North Navajo Drive offers exactly that kind of dual experience in Page. You can start your day with a standard Drip coffee or treat yourself to a sweet Birthday Cake Mocha from their extensive specialty menu. I really like that they press their Breakfast Burrito like a panini for a unique texture you do not find everywhere. The interior features hip decor and comfortable seating that makes it a decent spot to hang out. They also serve alcohol later in the day which sets them apart from your typical coffee shop. It is a busy spot where you can grab a Butter Croissant or an Everything Bagel with fig jam.

If you are looking for the most unique coffee setup in Flagstaff you have to check out Val's Workshop on San Francisco Avenue. It is a full-service salon and barbershop that also happens to be a killer coffee lounge. The woodworking inside is impressive and the vibe is totally hipster and cozy with tons of natural light. I love that they have separate zones so you can find a quiet corner to study or hang out in the game room. You can sip on a Vanilla Lavender Iced Latte while watching people get fresh cuts which is honestly a vibe. They serve their drinks in real ceramic mugs which is a nice touch that makes you want to stay awhile. Just know that the food is mostly limited to pastries like scones and turnovers so do not come here expecting a full brunch.

Steep Leaf Lounge

If you want a break from the standard espresso grind you need to visit Steep Leaf Lounge in downtown Flagstaff. Okay listen. Don't give me a hard time or complain for including a tea lounge on a coffee shop website. I felt compelled to include it because the vibe here is unmatched. I am also a tea lover and drink Darjeeling or Oolong tea almost daily. Anyway, back to Steep Leaf Lounge, they do offer a latte option and cold brew if you absolutely need your coffee fix but honestly you are here for the tea. They have a massive wall of high end loose leaf teas that you can smell before you buy. If you love tea as much as you love coffee this is a great place to be. You have to try the Masala Chai or the Lavender Mint Matcha. Some people claim they are the best they have ever had and I do agree. I personally love the seating options like the charming window seats for people-watching or the raised wooden platform with floor cushions for a full zen experience. The pastries are made in-house and you should definitely grab a Blackberry Danish or a Croissant. Bottom line is that you go there for the tea, desserts, and food before the coffee.

It is also a real hub for the local scene so do not be surprised if you catch occasional live music performances while you are there. The menu is huge and leans heavily into sweet specialty drinks like the "Snowbunny" which is a coconut and dark chocolate mocha or the "Elite" which uses Cubano shots. I have to mention that they serve Illy coffee for their espresso drinks. While it isn't a small-batch local roast, fans of the shop really praise the consistent and smooth flavor profile it provides. It is definitely more about the community feel and the "Big Kicker" breakfast sandwiches than it is about artisanal extraction but the energy is always great.

You have to try the "Carda-Mami" latte which mixes cardamom and pistachio for a flavor that is totally unique. The "Ferrero Rocher Latte" with sea salt cold foam is another must-try if you have a sweet tooth. It is a small spot but the outdoor seating is perfect for soaking up the downtown vibes. The staff is incredibly friendly and willing to guide you through their market selections. Seriously you need to grab a sandwich and a coffee here before you head out on your next Northern Arizona adventure.

It is located right near NAU so you will see plenty of students studying with laptops. The vibe is super relaxed and eclectic which makes it a solid spot to hang out for a while. They have a house specialty called the Hammer Head which is three shots of espresso topped with coffee if you really need a wake-up call. I do need to warn you about the consistency here though. The drink quality can really depend on who is behind the bar that day. Some reviews mention the espresso tasting burnt or the milk being scorched. You might find that the smoothies and flavored drinks taste a bit powdery or overly sweet compared to a craft shop. It is definitely a place you go for the food and the atmosphere rather than a precision coffee experience. That said, it is still a beloved local staple where you can grab a hearty breakfast and soak up that classic college town energy.

Macy's European Coffeehouse is arguably the most iconic and long-standing coffee shop you can visit in downtown Flagstaff Arizona. This place has been a local staple since 1979. You should expect a line out the door on weekends. The vibe inside is pure bohemian energy with eclectic art and a buzzing crowd. I have to warn you that they do not use artificial syrups here. They use real spices and cocoa to flavor their drinks. You absolutely must try the vegetarian biscuits and gravy or the Macy's Special. It is basically a latte mixed with their famous hot chocolate. It gets crowded and loud but that is part of the charm. If you want a quiet place to study this is probably not it. Checkout other cool cafes in nearby Sedona.

Wicked AZ Coffee on Historic Route 66 offers a quick drive-thru caffeine fix for travelers and locals in downtown Flagstaff. You will find this small stand right off the main road which makes it very convenient if you are staying at a nearby hotel. They specialize in sweet creations like the Butterscotch Bliss or a dirty chai topped with whipped cream. You can walk up to the window or drive through but keep in mind there is no seating area to relax. They also hand out pup cups if you have your dog with you in the car.

Dottie's Garden Coffee Shoppe

Remember when you were a kid and you would stumble onto something that felt like it should not exist? That is Dottie's Garden Coffee Shoppe. The shop is tucked inside Warner's Nursery in Flagstaff. You order your coffee surrounded by walls of greenery and flowers. Then you wander the greenhouse aisles with your cup, past succulents and whatever else is in season, and eventually find your way to the patio. It is a genuinely great setup and one of those concepts that makes you wonder why more nurseries have not done it. The coffee comes from Matador Coffee, a solid local Flagstaff roaster. The specialty lattes lean sweet (sometimes very sweet) and the espresso strength can vary depending on who is behind the bar. My suggestion: ask for half the syrup or just go with a standard drink and skip the flavoring altogether. The bones are good. But honestly, the coffee is almost beside the point. The atmosphere does the heavy lifting here. It is peaceful, a little hidden and unlike any other coffee stop in town.
