Aden Coffee House (formerly Shibam) serves Yemeni coffee and Turkish desserts in a warm relaxing space. View the artisanal menu and photos for authentic flavors. The menu (see photos) features traditional kettle-brewed coffee, organic date lattes, Turkish desserts, and Peru single-origin espresso drinks.
Something pulled me back here after the rebrand. Owner Ammar decided to ditch the Michigan-based Shibam franchise name and go independent as Aden Coffee House. The offerings remain rooted in Yemeni coffee culture but the space feels even more itself now. More confident maybe. More settled into what it wants to be.
I always loved the aesthetic here. I cannot fully put my finger on what makes it work but something about this cafe feels warm in a way that pulls you in. Very comforting and relaxing. The kind of place where you sit down and your shoulders drop an inch.
The folks here are extremely friendly. The hospitality shines through regardless of background. Some baristas may not be of Middle Eastern origin but they have genuinely embraced that famous Middle Eastern warmth. You feel welcomed the moment you walk in. That energy matters more than people realize.
I put the new-ish menu to the test during my visit. Started with the signature Yemeni coffee made in the kettle right in front of me. Watching that process alone is worth the trip. Then I tried a regular latte made from their Peru single-origin beans. The drink arrived in a beautiful cup visually polished and at just the perfect temperature. A beautiful Nuova Simonelli espresso machine sits on the counter to anchor the espresso program. Positive experience all around.
Gone are the Ethiopian beans they used for espresso in the past. The shop now focuses on Peru single-origin instead. The Ethiopian beans were darker roasted and the Peru comes in at a medium roast. I welcome this change. I am not usually a big fan of dark roasted coffees even when they happen to be from my favorite origin of Ethiopia. The medium roast lets more flavor through. I also tried the potato samosas and they were amazing. Not spicy at all which worked for me.
My wife ordered the organic date latte in hot format and I (of course) had to steal a few sips to try it. Very tasty and balanced between the coffee and sweetness. It felt a bit chocolaty which was a nice surprise. Then came the pistachio mousse cake. Not too sweet and delicious in that clean way good desserts pull off.
Most of their desserts are imported from Turkey. There were quite a few options on display and honestly I wanted to try them all. I guess I had to leave something for my next visit. The menu also features the popular Dubai chocolate if that is your thing.
I am unusual in some ways. I review coffee shops regularly as my side hustle. I usually don't have the luxury to visit a coffee shop multiple times because I have to keep exploring and trying new ones all the time. Arizona is a big state and there are tons of great coffee shops. That is my dilemma. Many of my regular readers know this by now. But Aden Coffee makes me want to break my own rule. They retain the rich traditions of Yemeni coffee culture while providing a distinct and flavorful alternative to typical coffee shop experiences. Perfect if you are looking to break from the routine and indulge in rich and authentic flavors. The warmth here is real. The coffee is thoughtful. The desserts are worth the detour. Sometimes you find a spot that just gets it right.

The Laymoon Cafe menu (see below) combines Middle Eastern coffee traditions with modern espresso drinks in Mesa. Expect Arabic coffee alongside cortados, cappuccinos, and specialty lattes. This new spot opened last weekend and the menu alone makes it worth checking out. But what really caught my attention was the equipment behind the counter. They installed a beautiful La Marzocco Strada as their centerpiece machine. Most new cafes would never invest in something like that. The choice tells you they are serious about quality from day one. I am impressed.
The space itself feels warm and inviting. Rugs everywhere. On the floor and hanging from the ceiling. It creates this cozy atmosphere that does not feel like typical Tempe minimalism. You walk in and immediately notice the texture and warmth.
I visited during opening weekend. The lines were absolutely massive. I waited longer than I wanted to. But once the initial hype dies down, this will be much easier to visit. I will definitely go back to try more of their menu.
I ordered the Upside Down Strawberry matcha. It was one of the best matcha drinks I have had. The layering was beautiful and the flavor profile actually delivered on what the visual promised. Not too sweet. Good balance.
The menu leans Middle Eastern and Mediterranean with some interesting twists. Espresso drinks cover the classics (americano, cortado, cappuccino, latte, nitro, cold brew). Specialty lattes include Spanish, Tiramisu, and Cardamom Rose. The matcha options go beyond standard preparations (Golden Cloud Spanish, Upside Down Strawberry). Refreshers include Strawberry Acai, Laymoon and Mint, and Lime Cooler.
Pastries are impressive. Chocolate croissant, chocolate pistachio croissant, banana chai muffin, cardamom cinnamon bun. The cookies include pistachio white chocolate and salted chocolate chip tahini. They serve baklava by the slice and biscoff banana pudding. Bagels come plain or zaatar (both with cream cheese). Breakfast options lean toward toast variations. Spiced zaatar avocado toast, classic caprese avocado toast, strawberries and chocolate toast, labne and honey toast. These are not your standard cafe breakfast items.
Laymoon sources their coffee from the acclaimed local roaster Press Coffee which I also reviewed on this webstie. That partnership makes sense. Press knows what they are doing and Laymoon is executing it on elite equipment.
Parking is a problem. I did not see any free parking around the shop. I parked in a near by ASU garage and paid $4 for one hour. There were metered spots on the street but nothing was available. Plan accordingly.
Laymoon Cafe is betting big on quality equipment, thoughtful menu design, and a warm inviting space. Opening weekend was chaotic but the Upside Down Strawberry matcha alone is worth a return visit. This place has potential to become a Tempe staple if they can maintain quality as the hype settles.

Jasmine Jo Coffee & Flowers is exactly what it sounds like. Fresh coffee. Fresh blooms. You get both the moment you walk in, when the smell of espresso and roses hit you at the same time. It is a good combination.
The shop sits inside the Tempe Business Center, which is walkable and shaded in a way that not many Tempe spots are. Parking out front can get tricky during busy hours. The better move is to go around to the west side of the building which drops you right into the back patio. It feels like a secret garden. Big trees, plenty of tables and shade everywhere. It is one of the nicest patios in Tempe, and most people walking in from the front have no idea it is back there.
The space is tight inside but it is full of charm. The vibe is cozy and a little European. The kind of place where time moves slower than it should on a Tuesday.
Espresso here is pulled from single origin beans roasted by Matador Coffee Roasting Co. out of Flagstaff, and it gives the drinks a bright and clean character. The machine doing the work is a Nuova Simonelli Appia II, which is a beautiful Italian-made setup worth appreciating if you are into that sort of thing. The Dirty Daisy is a floral twist on coffee that is smooth and easy to like. On my last visit I ordered a latte with whole milk and got something thinner, which was a small letdown. Still good, but worth mentioning.
If you love coffee and flowers, you will like this spot. It feels like a little escape in the middle of Tempe.

Cafe Cortez is the embodiment of a lifelong passion for coffee. Founded by third-generation Costa Rican coffee farmer Ron Cortez. This exceptional roastery and cafe is built on a "More Than Fair" principle, ensuring direct and ethical relationships with farmers while roasting some of the finest beans from around the world right in Tempe. The menu is a beautiful tribute to the craft, featuring a traditional Costa Rican "Vandola" pour-over that showcases the nuance and quality of their beans. Every drink, from a perfectly pulled espresso to a soulful latte, is crafted with expert care by passionate and knowledgeable baristas. The atmosphere is consistently described as magical and welcoming, making it a true hidden gem for those who want to experience coffee that is rich in both flavor and history.

Honey 2 A Bee in Tempe, AZ is a coffee and crepes shop with a menu that swings from specialty lattes and Turkish coffee all the way to Dubai Chocolate crepes and late night waffles. Yes, late night.
Let me start with the hours because they deserve their own moment. Honey 2 A Bee is open until midnight every night of the week. Friday and Saturday they push all the way to 3AM. And the espresso machine stays on until closing. If you are an ASU student who has ever desperately needed a real latte at 1:00AM during finals week, you now have a place. You are welcome.
The coffee program here pulls from two different traditions and both are good. The espresso drinks use a dark roasted Latin American blend sourced from Passport Coffee and Tea up in Scottsdale and formulated specifically for Honey 2 A Bee. Part of the blend is Brazilian. I ordered the small size on purpose. They pull two shots in both the small and the medium so going small meant less milk and a more concentrated cup. My regular readers know I tend to reach for light to medium roasts when it comes to espresso so the dark roast was a bit strong for my taste. That is on me not on them. Looking back, the medium size would have given the milk more room to balance things out nicely.
The Turkish coffee uses Al Ameed, a pre calibrated medium roast ground fine from Arabica beans with cardamom added for traditional herbal notes. It was aromatic and well rounded. If you have never had a proper Turkish coffee this is a good place to start.
We also tried the lemon mint refresher. It was bubbly, bright and delicious. A tiny bit on the sweet side for my taste but I asked Abdul (the owner who was there that evening and could not have been more welcoming) if they could dial back the syrup next time and he said absolutely. Good to know.
Now about the crepes. I asked Abdul which one was the least sweet and he pointed me straight to the Honey and Cheese Crepe. Best decision of the evening. It came with whipped cream and strawberries and it was perfect. Not too sweet, incredibly satisfying and honestly I could have eaten three of them without apology. If you are like me and prefer things on the lighter side of sweet, start there.
For those who want to go the other direction, the Dubai Chocolate crepe is the one you have been seeing all over social media and it earns the attention. It looks extraordinary. Do yourself a favor and schedule a gym session before you go. You will need the head start (just kidding).
The staff were genuinely warm and attentive in a way that felt like Middle Eastern hospitality rather than a transactional coffee bar experience. You feel like a guest here not a number in a queue. The space is cozy and smaller than you might expect but it works.
For parking: it is free. Pull into the garage at the back and park on the first level. Look for the Retail Parking or Carmin Retail Parking sign (check the listing photos for reference). There is also a customer bathroom available right behind the shop inside the Carmin building.
Honey 2 A Bee is doing a lot of things at once and somehow pulling all of it off. Great coffee, a dessert menu that demands attention and hours that make every other shop in Tempe look like it goes to bed too early.

How does a former bank vault become the most productive workspace in Tempe? Xtreme Bean Coffee occupies a refurbished Chase bank building where the original vault still stands! Today that vault serves as a quiet room filled with cubicle-like workspaces. Students and remote workers have claimed it as their headquarters for years.
The Wells family runs this shop with consistent attention to quality. They roast their own beans on-site using a Diedrich roaster. The menu spans from classic espresso to an extensive selection of flavored specialty lattes and frappes. They even offer energy drink infusions for those who want something beyond traditional coffee.
The interior feels like an older-school coffeehouse rather than a minimalist modern space. Local artwork hangs on the walls. Stained glass catches the light. The atmosphere invites you to settle in and stay awhile.
Food options include bagel sandwiches and pastries. The bagels come from Back East Bagels. You can also grab other light bites if you need something to fuel a long work session. Xtreme Bean stays open late until 8:00PM on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Other days they close at 6:00PM which is still consider late for a coffee shop standards. If you don't feel like going in on busy days, the drive-thru is rare thing to find these days with independent specialty coffee shops. Plenty of space and oh, did I also mention that they occasionally hosts live music events? Usually on Friday evenings starting at 6pm.
This place has survived and thrived for over twenty years because it delivers what local Tempe folks are looking for. Consistent drinks. Good hours. A unique space that feels different from the generic coffee chain experience.
The vault tells you everything about Xtreme Bean. It took something built for security and isolation and transformed it into a place for community and productivity.

The slow bar is a coffee lover's dream. They specialize equally in unique teas and coffee. Try a ceremonial matcha affogato or one of their specialty lattes. You can grab whole beans to take home. The atmosphere is a beautiful mix. You'll find "bohemian eclecticism and rustic wood" throughout, creating a very calm vibe. It works as a great workspace, but be aware that parking and finding a seat can be a challenge during peak hours. For a bite, they offer sandwiches and snacks. The gluten-free bagel seems to be a popular hit. Expect high quality world-class coffee choices and the price reflects for some of these items.
