The moment you walk in, something shifts. The air carries the kind of smell that reminds you why you started drinking coffee in the first place. Not burnt. Not stale. Clean and deep and alive. A roast that is still days fresh has a particular presence and you notice it immediately here.

Then your eyes find the Victoria Arduino Eagle behind the bar. Polished. Purposeful. The kind of machine that does not sit in a shop by accident.

You choose your espresso base from a selection of single origins. The Ethiopian Suke Quto arrives as a latte and the first sip does something unexpected. There is a floral lift that opens it up, followed by a sparkling brightness that moves like fruit on the tongue, and then a quiet landing of dark chocolate that holds everything together. Light roasted. Perfectly extracted. The kind of cup that slows you down without asking you to.

When you are ready to go deeper, the slow bar is waiting. Multiple single origin pour over options line the menu like a quiet invitation. Take your time. Nobody here is in a hurry and nobody here is going to make you feel like you should be ordering differently.

Eventually you find your way upstairs to the outdoor terrace. Oak Creek moves below. The red rocks of Sedona frame everything above it. The Tlaquepaque rooftops stretch out in between. You hold your cup and the whole scene asks nothing of you.

Sedona offers many shops trying to sell you the vibe. Living Chocolate sells you a heartfelt experience. It is a vibrant celebration of cacao in its purest most authentic forms. You might be wondering by now why am I reading about a featured chocolate shop on a coffee shop website? It is a reasonable question… My passion is great coffee. Living Chocolate earns its spot because its espresso service is truly wonderful. The shop’s dedication to quality extends seamlessly to the coffee. Shots are carefully pulled from a classic Astra espresso machine which pairs nicely with a legendary Mazzer grinder. This robust setup allows the barista to control and fine tune great shots.

The menu features standard espresso options. It offers a classic double shot called the Morning Do. You can order the Afternoon Loft, which is espresso with milk. The coffee service often partners with the main attraction. The Lava drink is a double shot of espresso with a Living Chocolate truffle dropped in.
This shop merges wellness with your daily caffeine fix. You can elevate any drink on the menu. Ask for a potent medicinal mushroom blend. The blends feature Lion’s Mane and other powerful adaptogens. It also offers unique Ayurvedic soma shots.Given all the wellness focus and nootropic potential, I made a very serious β€œmental” note to try those elixirs next time. My courage was not quite there on the first visit here.

I recommend the Ecuador Creamy Cacaoffee. It blends Ecuador cacao coconut cream and honey. Then a double shot of espresso completes the rich thick cup.Β This is not a standard mocha. It is a genuine chocolate and coffee fusion. The Ecuador cacao adds a potent and vibrant depth of flavor. Coconut cream makes the cup incredibly rich and thick. You get a powerful buzz from the double espresso shot. Crucially, it is sweetened only with honey. Zero cane sugar is used. I am officially counting it as a health food!

Owner Shari runs this incredible shop. Her deep knowledge and passion are completely infectious. She crafts soul-warming ceremonial cacaos. She makes unbelievably delicious and healthy truffles. I appreciate that the shop uses high quality authentic ingredients. All chocolates are sweetened exclusively with honey. Zero cane sugar is used.

Living Chocolate is not just a place to grab a drink… It is the absolute sweet spot where Sedona’s quest for healing meets pure flavor.

Fay Cafe in West Sedona is a coffee shop, plant store, and bookshop in one beautifully calm space, serving expert pour-over coffee with beans from FreeForm Coffee Roasters. Sedona coffee shops often fall into two camps: rustic markets or new-wave minimalism. Fay Cafe combines the two and then adds books and plants, which is frankly my ultimate happy place. This spot is a unique trifecta all rolled into one beautiful space in West Sedona. I instantly connected with their philosophy. They focus entirely on supporting local Arizona businesses, sourcing everything from their baked goods to their furniture and gifts right here. They even partner with Sedona's own FreeForm Coffee Roasters for their beans. Now for the coffee. I fell completely in love with the pure dedication to the ritual here. They are purists: they serve pour-over coffee exclusively, rejecting automated batch brewing to ensure the freshest cup possible. If you have not had the privilege of trying a pour-over, it is quite an experience. This is the preferred method for coffee professionals to test new beans because it strips away variables and allows you to truly taste the subtle notes and characteristics of the coffee. It offers a cup defined by clarity and vibrancy. Since everything is ground to order right in front of you, watching that pour-over process is an art form. I tried both the simple black pour-over and one of their lattes and both were stellar. It is incredibly rare to find a latte that highlights the subtlety of the coffee bean. Their version uses four roast choices and dairy alternatives like oat or almond milk and achieves that perfect balance. Beyond the drinks, the atmosphere is a tranquil dream. The interior is filled with handpicked house plants (over 100 varieties often in stock) and a curated library of new and used books. The comfortable calm environment is perfect for settling in. Just remember to plan accordingly. Fay Cafe is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is closed Monday and Tuesday. If you show up outside those hours, you will just have to buy a plant instead.

I mentioned briefly in my Big Park Bakery review that the same owner runs Firecreek next door. What I did not get into is the full story. His name is Mike Funk, he came down from Seattle, landed in northern Arizona around 2008 and built something that has grown into six locations across the state. This location in the Village of Oak Creek is the Sedona area flagship. The outdoor patio has those iconic red rock views that make you feel like you accidentally wandered into a postcard. Inside is cozy and warm though the place earns its crowds during peak tourist season, which is just the nature of being this good in a town this beautiful. The coffee program is built entirely around their own roasts and all the syrups are made from scratch in house. No commercial syrups here. If you order a flavored latte, everything going into it was made by them. That is a nice detail and you can taste the difference. It is worth knowing that Firecreek is very blend-forward. They love their blends and they lean into them hard. If you are the type who shows up looking for a single origin pour-over situation, you might be a little underwhelmed on that front. But if you are here for a well crafted espresso drink with a house made syrup, this place delivers. There is also a "Pay It Forward" board in the cafe, a small but genuinely nice touch that says something about how they think about the people around them. Firecreek started in the north part of Arizona and expanded south to Phoenix later. This location still feels like the heart of what they built. Do yourself a favor and grab a seat on that patio, order something good and let the Sedona views slowly sink in. While this location captures the red rock energy, the Firecreek experience continues across the state. FreeForm Coffee Roasters in Sedona, AZ is one of the best specialty coffee shops in Arizona. Fresh roasts, single-origin espresso options, and a slow bar that means business. Some coffee shops make you feel welcome. FreeForm Coffee Roasters in Sedona makes you feel proud. I walked out of there thinking: yes, Arizona can absolutely hold its own against any coffee city in the world! And I mean that. Let me start with the machine. A Victoria Arduino Eagle espresso machine sits behind the bar and if you know, you know. If you do not know, just trust that it is the kind of equipment that signals a place is serious without needing to announce it. Owners Daniel and Monica Garland have built something genuinely special here. They have since moved their roasting operations from Sedona to a larger facility in Cottonwood, AZ which tells you the operation is growing. But the soul of it is still very much present in this shop by the Open Gate Sculpture roundabout. Now here is where it gets fun. You get to choose your espresso base from their single-origin options. That alone puts FreeForm in a different category from most coffee shops. I went with the Ethiopian Suke Quto for my latte. It is a microlot from the Guji highlands, processed using a limited-oxygen fermentation that pulls out floral aromatics, sparkling fruit character and dark chocolate depth. Light roasted. Phenomenal. Perfectly balanced. One of the better lattes I have had in a long time. I had my eye on the Mon Cheri seasonal blend for a second latte (notes of amaretto, cherry, almond and milk chocolate). Turns out it was not available as an espresso base option that day. These things happen with seasonal and specialty offerings. No hard feelings. It is actually available as a pour over, which is probably the right format for beans that expressive anyway. And it gives me a perfectly good reason to go back. Speaking of pour overs, the slow bar here is impressive. Multiple single-origin options. This is a proper destination for coffee aficionados. The kind of place where you can go deep if you want to, or simply order a Vanilla Rose Latte and a muffin without anyone giving you a look. FreeForm famously upholds a no coffee snobbery policy and I love them for it. All the coffee bags for sale are beautifully packed and smell incredible. They are days fresh from the roast. I already had plenty of single origins at home but I still bought a 12oz bag of their Breakfast Blend Aurora (Brazil, Peru and Ethiopia). Named for the Roman goddess of dawn. Nutty, chocolatey and low in acidity. It was calling my name and I answered. The space itself is small but well done. Comfortable seating inside. And then there is the upstairs outdoor area that overlooks the Tlaquepaque shopping center and Oak Creek. We ended up walking to Tlaquepaque after (about a 5 minute walk) and crossed a beautiful pedestrian bridge over Oak Creek where the water was moving fast. A perfect pairing with a great cup of coffee. Now let me tell you about the part that actually made me respect this place beyond the coffee. Accourding to their website, FreeForm donates 1% of coffee sales revenue to vetted regional nonprofits working in environmental stewardship and human rights. They offset the carbon footprint of every package they ship. They have planted 15,300 trees in partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects. They pay all employees a minimum of $25 per hour (well above Arizona's minimum wage) and offer employer sponsored healthcare. They source at a minimum of twice Fair Trade standards. Cuptown Coffeehouse is a cozy Uptown Sedona cafe with red rock views, free parking, local art on every wall, and coffee that keeps pulling you back for more. Sedona is a tourist town and most of the coffee spots on 89A feel like it. Cuptown does not. It sits just off the main strip with free and easy parking. There is a front porch where you can stare at Snoopy Rock while your latte cools down and a vibe that feels more neighborhood than highway. That alone separates it from a lot of the competition. The beans come from Late for the Train, a acclaimed Flagstaff roaster. The coffee here is consistently good in a way that sneaks up on you. You walk in on day one of your Sedona trip and find yourself back two more times before checkout. The caramel latte is the move and it stays on the right side of sweet without trying too hard. The space inside has that eclectic lived-in feel no designer can fake. Local art covers the walls and handmade mugs sit on shelves. Used books are scattered around and are for sale. You can buy the art. You can buy the mugs. It is part coffee shop, part gallery, and it works. Now here is the bonus. The parking lot is shared with Crystal Castle which is a beautiful store selling stones, amethyst, quartz, calcite, jewelry, and all the things Sedona was put on this earth to sell. Grab your latte and maybe walk next door (they open at 10AM). Spend twenty minutes in a room full of crystals! It is not a third wave lab doing experimental things. It is a solid and comfortable coffeehouse powered by a roaster that takes the coffee seriously. For anyone staying nearby or gearing up for a hike, it earns a spot in your morning rotation fast. There is a particular kind of happiness that only exists at 8am when someone hands you a warm donut and a seriously good cup of coffee. Sedonuts in West Sedona has figured this out completely. This husband and wife operation is not trying to be a third wave coffee temple or a sit-down brunch destination. It knows exactly what it is. Fresh donuts made daily, a line out the door and a coffee program that has absolutely no business being this good for a donut shop. And I mean that as the highest compliment. The donuts are light and fluffy and not cloyingly sweet. The kind that make you wonder why every donut is not made this way. The flavors run from creative Sedona-themed options to the classics done right. My advice: get there early. They sell out. This is not a marketing gimmick. People show up for a reason. Now let us talk about the coffee because this is where Sedonuts genuinely surprises you. They source from FreeForm Coffee Roasters (yes, the same FreeForm I covered on this site) and they are pulling shots with a single origin medium roasted Peru. Notes of black cherry, almond and chocolate. It is a warm and balanced cup that holds up beautifully as a latte. The baristas work fast because the line demands it but the coffee still arrives hot and consistent. That is harder to pull off than it looks. The setup is small and the flow is fast. You pick your donuts from the case first then order your coffee and pay at the register. It keeps things moving and somehow makes the whole experience feel even more satisfying. Is it a quick stop?
