Downtown Gilbert just got a coffee shop built by parents who were tired of having nowhere good to take their kids. Villa Meola Coffee is that place and it is worth the trip.
Michael and Callen Meola are the couple behind it. Before this shop existed, they spent years searching for places with enough space for their two young daughters to roam around without anyone losing their mind. Instead of just accepting that nothing quite fit, they built the place they always wanted.
The name "Villa Meola" is what they always called their own home. The whole idea is that you feel invited the same way a friend would invite you over. Walking around the space, you get that.
They ended up partnering with Mario Cimmino of Gelato Cimmino, the authentic Italian gelato shop right there in Downtown Gilbert. The two businesses now share the space which gives the whole place a strong Italian character that goes well beyond the menu.
And speaking of Italian character, the espresso here comes out of an Astoria machine with a manual lever. There are maybe a handful of shops in all of Arizona running human powered manual levers. Unlike modern pump-driven machines, the lever puts the extraction entirely in the hands of the barista. It is harder to master but produces a creamy texture that a pump-driven machine simply struggles to replicate. Even the pressure profiler expensive machiens with all the fancy electronics strugle to replicate a pull like a human would. The beans are from Momentto Coffee roasters and is a medium roasted blend with a full body and zero bitterness. That combination shows in the cup.
The drinks are named after Italian classics. Limoncello, Cannoli, Caffe Forza, Spumoni. We got the Spumoni, named after the molded Italian gelato. It is deeply chocolatey with pistachio pieces at the bottom and a subtle cherry note running underneath. If the cherry had a bit more presence, this drink would be almost unfairly good. We also got the Cannoli Latte, which uses house made almond milk and actual cannoli cream on top in place of cold foam. Gentle cinnamon notes, everything done right.
All drinks come out half sweet by default, which is the right call. Every drink also arrives with a small piece of biscotti (noticeably better than anything from a store shelf). You can buy extra pieces and you probably should. They are that good!
The space is big. There is indoor and outdoor seating, a large patio with umbrellas, a play area for kids and a little iron fence around the patio with a self closing gate so the kiddos do not wander into the street. There are books, games and plenty of reasons for a small kid to stay happily occupied while you actually enjoy your drink.
Gilbert needed a spot like this. A family friendly space with genuinely great coffee, Italian inspired drinks and gelato all under the same roof is not something you just stumble across. The Meolas built exactly what they were looking for. As it turns out, a lot of other people were looking for the same thing.

Charlee Rose Coffee in Gilbert is a boutique coffee shop tucked inside a flower shop. The menu is focused, the drinks are serious and the whole thing is wonderful.
There is a moment when you walk into Charlee Rose Coffee where you think, "wait, am I in the right place?" You are. The coffee operation sits inside Lena's flower and plant shop on Gilbert Rd (just a short walk from the heritage district) and is surrounded by greenery and a calm that most coffee shops spend a lot of money trying to manufacture. Here it is just... natural.
This is a family run shop and they have only been open for about six months as of this writing (they ran a trailer before finding their home inside the flower shop). The care shows in the details. They weigh out their ingredients for drinks and they source single origin and organic Mexican Chiapas beans from Bergies Coffee, a local roaster right here in Gilbert. That is the kind of thing that separates people who take coffee seriously from everyone else. Fresh delivery is on the shelf so you can grab a bag of those same medium roasted beans to take home if you like.
On my visit I tried the Strawberry Cheesecake Latte from the Spring menu and it was an A+ experience! Perfectly balanced, no bitterness from the espresso and none of that lazy move some shops pull where the cup is packed wall to wall with ice and you are left with a watered down drink. This one was dialed in. The whipped cream on top was something else entirely. Rich, flavorful and delicious.
I also had the traditional latte with whole milk. The Mexican Chiapas beans came through beautifully and the drink was balanced start to finish. One more thing worth noting: they adjust the number of espresso shots based on drink size so the larger size is not just a more diluted version of the smaller one. That is the mark of a shop that actually cares about what they are serving.
If you haven't tried it yet, the Cinnamon Roll Latte is the thing to get. It is topped with whipped cream cheese and it is as good as it sounds. The white mocha with strawberry cold foam is worth your attention too. They also offer some healthier and unique drink options if you want to go that route. If you are hungry, pastries come from Sweet Surrender Pastries which is a local bakery operation specializing in vegan and celiac-safe options. Great stuff you can actually feel good about eating.
WiFi is available and the seating situation is genuinely impressive. Multiple sofas and chairs in tucked away spots spread across the space. Many of the seating areas are far enough apart that you feel like you have your own little corner of the world. If you are the type to work from a laptop and worry about prying eyes, this place has you covered.
Charlee Rose is refreshing in every sense of the word. It does not try to be a big coffee brand. It just tries to be good. And it is.

Some of the best coffee spots in Phoenix are the ones you almost never find. The Commons Coffeehouse in Gilbert is one of them. It sits on the Redemption Church campus off W Elliot Rd and that single fact probably keeps a lot of people away. It should not. You do not need to be religious to enjoy this place. Nobody is going to hand you a pamphlet. Just come for the coffee.
When you enter the campus from W Elliot Rd, the coffee shop is on your left in the west side building. Look for the "Coffeehouse Open" sign visible through the glass.
The space is one of the most breathtaking I have encountered in any coffee shop in the Valley. Spacious is an understatement. The ceilings are high. The floors are terrazzo. Floor to ceiling glass walls allow the natural light to pour in generously. A cluster of black leather armchairs arranged around a deep red Persian style rug anchors one corner of the room. The rest of the seating is a mix of cafe tables and high tops.
The real showstopper is the back wall. Large glass garage style doors open fully to a wide covered patio that stretches out toward a green field. Sit on that patio. You will hear birds. Maybe a distant train. That is about it.
Behind a glass partition inside the building is a Commons Prayer Space. It is accessible from outside the shop, not from within it. There is a sign asking visitors to leave food and drink behind before entering. I did not go in but I could see it from where I sat. It was calm and quiet and honestly a bit appealing even for someone that is not religious. Think of it as a private room for contemplation. A nice extra for those who want it and completely ignorable for those who do not.
The WiFi is excellent by the way. This is a genuinely great place to sit and work.
Now the coffee. The shop sources exclusively from Saint Frank Coffee which is an acclaimed San Francisco roaster. The name comes from Saint Francis of Assisi, a figure known for finding meaning in the simple and the ordinary. That philosophy carries directly into how Saint Frank approaches coffee. They describe themselves not as technical masters but as translators, the final step in a story that begins with small scale farmers in places like Honduras and Burundi. It is a humble and sincere way to run a roastery and it shows in the cup.
The espresso is pulled from Saint Frank's Little Brother blend. It is a medium roast sourced entirely from small family farms in the Santa Barbara Mountain region of Honduras. The roaster intentionally combines specific lots from that region to maintain a consistent profile. Think of it as a regional blend where the individual farm lots each contribute something distinct to the final cup. The tasting notes are milk chocolate, caramel and honey and those come through clearly. My latte (hot, whole milk) was smooth and well balanced. I picked up the honey note in particular. Nothing aggressive. Nothing out of place. Just a clean and satisfying cup.
A quick note on sizing. Both the small and large hot lattes come with a double shot. If you are tempted by the large, consider asking for an extra shot (available for an additional charge). More milk without more espresso tends to dilute the balance and this blend deserves better than that.
The drip is pulled from Sister Moon, a medium roast Latin American blend currently featuring a 50/50 split between producers in Bolivia and Honduras. Where Little Brother leans slightly brighter, Sister Moon goes deeper with cocoa, toffee and toasted hazelnut. I tried a sample and it was smooth and approachable. A great option if you prefer a more classic coffee profile.
The Commons Coffeehouse is a rare thing. A spacious, serene and genuinely well run coffee shop with serious beans and an atmosphere that is hard to replicate. The church campus connection is a non issue once you are inside. What you will find instead is one of the most peaceful places in the East Valley to sit, sip and breathe.

Do NOT let the name fool you. Decadent Macaron may look like a pastry shop but it is quietly holding its own as a serious coffee destination in Gilbert. It is tucked into Verde at Cooley Station and feels like a playful little hideaway where someone decided dessert and serious coffee should share the same stage. I went in expecting cute. I did not expect to start mentally comparing their drinks to some of the bigger names in the East Valley.
The coffee menu is surprisingly deep for a place that could have coasted on sugar and vibes. They run a full espresso bar on a high end La Marzocco Linea machine pulling shots with beans from acclaimed Provision Coffee out of Phoenix which I also reviewed on this site so you can see exactly what they are working with. As of my last visit they are using Provision's Prickly Pear blend. A medium roast with notes of stone fruit, caramel and chocolate. Balanced and rich. One of Provision's top offerings and an excellent choice for a shop where the espresso needs to stand up alongside some serious desserts. And for those who want to slow things down a little, they also offer a pour over on the V60 using the same Prickly Pear beans. I did not get to try it on this visit but a balanced medium roast with that flavor profile sounds like a very good reason to come back.
Their specialty lattes are where things get fun. You can order most of them hot or iced, and they manage to walk that line where drinks feel creative without turning into pure sugar bombs. The Strawberry Fields latte is a good example. It leans into the strawberry theme but you can still taste the underlying espresso instead of losing it under syrup. On a warmer day, an iced Strawberry Fields with one of their heart shaped straws feels like peak Gilbert cafe energy in the best way.
Matcha drinkers are not an afterthought here either. One of the sleeper hits is the matcha latte but get it with macadamia nut milk instead of the dairy. It comes out very creamy and rich with that slight nuttiness from the macadamia that makes the drink feel a little more grown up than your average flavored matcha. If you usually struggle to find a good non dairy matcha option, this one is worth the drive.
Of course, the macarons are still a big part of the experience. You get a rotating cast of flavors plus playful specials and themed sets. The churro macaron is a standout if you like cinnamon sugar desserts. They also lean into events and themes in a way that fits the space. Think Taylor Swift album days, Star Wars or Barbie themes and even Disney weekends that make the whole cafe feel like a live Instagram story. Somehow it stays more charming than cringey, maybe because the execution backs it up.
The space itself is light, feminine and a little bit Paris meets East Valley. It feels like the kind of cafe where you could meet a friend, grab coffee and a couple of macarons and then realize you have been talking for an hour. Between the atmosphere, the strong coffee program built on Provision beans and the details like the cute heart shaped straws, Decadent Macaron ends up being more than just a dessert stop. If you are hunting for some of the best coffee in Gilbert but still want a place that feels fun and a little whimsical, this is an easy one to recommend.

Little Jupiter Cafe is a specialty coffee shop in Gilbert. The space is cute and cozy with a pleasant modern atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in. It is one of the better specialty shops in the East Valley and the big news is that they now roast their own beans in house.
They use a Colombia and Costa Rica blend for some drinks and a Colombia and Ethiopian blend for others. Everything is light roast. If you have been reading my reviews you know that is exactly what I want to hear. The Slow Bar still has pour over options worth trying if you want to sit and watch your coffee being made one cup at a time.
The house lattes are good. The Cubano and the Coconut Tres Leches are both flavorful without being too sweet.
The staff is friendly and clearly cares about the drinks they are making. The food menu is a nice bonus and will not break the bank.
The shop is also very work friendly. Good WiFi and solid outlet access throughout. Little Jupiter decided to roast their own light roast beans and bet on flavor. That is a good move and it is working.

Casita Coffee, just steps from the Gilbert Heritage District, has a menu loaded with creative drinks. It grew from a beloved mobile cart into a brick and mortar cafe.
But the real headline is the latte. A plain whole milk latte made with a single origin washed Colombia El Nevado, sourced from Moxie Coffee. It is one of the best lattes I have ever tasted. And I have tasted a lot of lattes. The beans were perfectly rested after roast, sitting right in that sweet spot where the espresso truly sings. Freshness is one part of the magic. The other part? Whatever the heck Moxie is doing with the roasting process.
Honestly, I do not know what kind of alchemy Moxie is practicing. Their El Nevado is dialed in to a degree that does not feel quite fair. And the funny thing is, their Guatemala CODECH tastes shockingly similar even though it is a completely different origin from a completely different country. So the terroir is not doing the heavy lifting here. There has to be some secret roasting move going on. Maillard reaction sorcery. Some development time witchcraft. Whatever it is, I am here for it.
Credit where it is due though. Moxie roasts for plenty of shops, but Casita is the one who put this exact bean in my cup. The owner, Mr. Herrera, told me that he personally chose these beans for their incredible flavor. He hunted for the right flavor profile and refused to settle for anything less than the best. That level of care is rare, and in the East Valley it is borderline miraculous. We used to drive clear across the Valley for coffee like this. Casita brought it to our doorstep.
So if you find yourself wandering the Heritage District, keep walking. Casita is a few blocks away and your latte is waiting. Fair warning though, it just might ruin every other latte for you.

Mythical Coffee is a true titan of the Arizona coffee scene. This shop is an essential destination for any serious coffee enthusiast. As an in-house roaster, they demonstrate an exceptional commitment to quality. Their passion is clear in every single bag of beans they produce. The centerpiece of their cafe is an outstanding pour-over bar. It features a rotating selection of meticulously sourced single-origin coffees from around the world. Each option comes with detailed tasting notes, inviting guests on a global flavor journey. The baristas are true artisans that are consistently praised for their skill, passion, and incredibly friendly service. They craft everything from a perfect nuanced cortado to wildly creative and balanced seasonal lattes. These specialty drinks showcase house-made syrups that complement the coffee beautifully. What does coffee taste like when the family who grew it also roasts it and serves it to you? At Peixoto, you get to find out. They own their farm in Brazil. The family has been growing coffee there for over a century. This is not some marketing line about partnerships or fair trade stamps. This is actual crop to cup integration that maybe a handful of places in the entire country can claim. It matters because you taste the difference.
The space itself feels like walking into a minimalist tech office but in a good way. Modern and airy with two floors. The upstairs has this loft situation with comfy chairs and outlets everywhere. People camp out here to work (like seriously camp out). You might have to hunt for a table during peak hours but the atmosphere makes it worth the search.
The seasonal drinks get creative without being obnoxious about it. The Coconut Cold Brew comes back every summer and people lose their minds over it! The Hot Honey Latte has a cayenne kick that works better than it sounds like it should. The matcha is smooth and not chalky (which is rarer than you would think). You can get most drinks as either espresso or matcha. This is brilliant because some days you want caffeine that punches you in the face and other days you want something gentler.
They use macadamia nut milk and oat milk. No almond milk though so do not ask. The baristas know what they are doing with pour-overs and actually use gooseneck kettles like they are supposed to. When someone takes the time to do manual pour-overs properly, you notice. Behind the bar sit two Sanremo Opera 3 group head espresso machines. That is six total group heads that could be working at any given time. This is serious firepower that lets them handle volume without sacrificing quality.
The pastries rotate and come from local bakeries. Get there early if you want food because they sell out. The macarons are delicate and worth trying if they have them. On Tuesdays they do Swedish baked goods including cardamom buns with almond paste that are genuinely excellent. The variety keeps things interesting.
At peak times, lines could look intimidating but they move fast. You will get your drink quickly even when the place is packed. The whole operation runs efficiently.
Fair warning about pricing. A 16 ounce specialty latte will run you around eight bucks. Some people think this is reasonable for good coffee from a family farm while others think its steep for their daily routine. You decide where you land on that.
This is what happens when a family decides to bring their century of coffee farming expertise to Arizona. The farm connection is real. The equipment is professional grade. The execution is there in every cup. Worth the trip to Peixoto in Agritopia whether you are settling in to work for hours or just grabbing something excellent to go.

GrindTime Coffee is the kind of beloved, family-owned gem that every neighborhood deserves. From the moment you walk into the bright, light-filled space, you're greeted with a genuinely warm welcome and the immediate sense that these folks are serious about great coffee, starting with exceptional beans from the acclaimed local roaster, Peixoto. The menu is a playground for any coffee lover, featuring everything from a meticulously prepared pour-over to a unique and delicious Hopped Cold Brew.

How I choose and review these shops
Every shop on this page earns its place. I start at the source. I look for bean traceability and transparency, because great coffee begins long before it reaches the cup. I pay close attention to roast philosophy evaluating whether the roast profile honors the origin characteristics of the bean rather than burying them. If a shop does not roast in-house, that is fine, as long as it partners with recognized specialty roasters who share these same sourcing standards.
From there I study the craft. On the equipment side, I look for commercial hardware capable of precise temperature stability and pressure profiling along with high end grinders such as Mahlkonig, Mythos, or Mazzer. A quality grinder delivers a uniform grind size which prevents uneven extraction and the bitter or flat cups that follow. Then I watch the baristas at work. I look for real technical execution. Are they weighing the dry grounds in the portafilter, timing the shot, and weighing the liquid output? Finally, I talk to the staff and ask questions. The team on shift should be able to speak to the current espresso blend or single origin offerings, including the origin, the roast level and what flavors you should expect. When a shop gets all of this right, it makes the list.
