Decibel Coffee Works

There is a coffee company on the west side of Tucson named after a unit of sound. The room Decibel Coffee Works operates in is quiet. The setting is outdoors under tin roofs in a park of oxidized shipping containers. The name has nothing to do with the playlist.

Decibel Coffee Works is in building 9 at the MSA Annex. The development is assembled from stacked freight containers, the kind that look better the longer the desert works on them. Decibel Coffee Works occupies one of them. The counter is a walk up window cut into the container wall. There is no door to push, no air conditioned room, no table built for a laptop. The seating is outdoor pavilions and semi private nooks created by massive container doors.

I admit I walk into this category biased. The container park cafe often relies on salvaged cargo box architecture to pose for photos rather than focus on the craft in the cup. Decibel Coffee Works subverts those expectations completely.

What interrupts that read here is precision. Decibel Coffee Works roasts in house, on site. The owners are musicians and audio engineers. Of course those owners dial in a shot the way those owners would dial in a mix.

The beans hold up the hardware. The coffee rotates, sometimes a single origin, sometimes a blend and the notes run like liner notes. The drip leans bright. The Sangre Negra, a South American blend anchors the counter.

Wi-Fi is on the amenity list, but the average visit in the summer runs fifteen minutes. This is a stop, not an office. Parking is paid, the walk in is pleasant, dogs come along.
