The Ultimate Urban Desert Coffee Experience - Tempe

Tempe buzzes with a unique and captivating energy. It is instantly recognizable as the proud home of ASU. It is also considered the most densely populated city in the valley of the sun. Tempe offers the “Ultimate Urban Desert Experience” and is centrally located near Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Mesa. It’s highly walkable particularly near the university and the city sets the stage for a youthful and energetic coffee culture.

Coffee shops function as much more than places to grab a drink here. They are essential community hubs and study sanctuaries. Due to the enormous student population, many cafes specifically cater to their needs by offering ample seating, plenty of  power outlets, and late hours.

The local scene is richly diverse and offers something for every coffee lover:

  • Third-Wave Roasters: You can find serious craft destinations and artisanal pour-overs at spots like Press Coffee and Cartel Roasting Co.
  • International Flair: The diversity is enhanced by specialized cafes such as Cafetal Coffee, rooted in a “crop-to-cup” Colombian mission, and Shaghf Cafe, which offers authentic Arab-inspired specialty coffee and boasts a full slow bar with advanced brewing methods.

Tempe’s coffee culture is tied directly to the city’s active outdoor life. Visitors grab a coffee or cold brew before hiking the iconic “A” Mountain (Hayden Butte) or enjoying water sports like kayaking on Tempe Town Lake. These businesses are cultural anchors that frequently host local events, live music and art displays. They are also the perfect starting point before diving into a night out on Mill Avenue.

Whether you are a student, a coffee connoisseur, or a tourist looking for an authentic local experience, this guide has a recommendation for you. Start exploring Tempe’s exciting coffee shops below.

Infusion Coffee & Tea

Location: 1300 E 8th St, Tempe, AZ 85281

Hours: M-F 7:00am-6:00pm

In a city buzzing with cafes, Infusion Coffee and Tea Crafters stands apart not just as a coffee shop, but as an institution. Forget the fleeting trends of minimalist design! Infusion is a temple dedicated to the pure, unadulterated power and knowledge of coffee. This is where the craft is studied, perfected and celebrated. Functioning as a world-class roastery, a full coffee lab, and a vital training ground for the industry’s best.

This is no mere coffee school. Infusion holds the prestigious title of being the first Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Academy in the Americas. This means baristas and roasters literally travel from across the globe to train within these walls. That pedigree is your guarantee: whether you order a simple drip or a complex single origin pour-over, your drink will be executed with flawless precision. At the heart of their espresso bar beats a Sanremo Opera, a marvel of Italian engineering. This espresso machine is a statement piece in the specialty coffee world, giving baristas unparalleled control over the extraction process.

The journey begins with a deep commitment to ethical direct-trade sourcing. The beans are then roasted in-house on their Ozturk roaster to coax out their most vibrant and nuanced flavors. The result is a stunning menu that caters to every palate. The star of the show for coffee purists is the Slow Bar which is a veritable playground of brewing methods. Choose your single-origin bean (perhaps a natural Ethiopia or a washed Papua New Guinea) and then select your ideal brewing method from a list that reads like a coffee lover’s dream: V60, Chemex, Aeropress, French Press, Syphon, Ibrik, and Moka Pot.

For those seeking a bolder creation, the signature drinks menu is a testament to their creativity. Try the “Spro’j” a surprisingly delightful combination of espresso and orange juice that has become a local legend. But the artistry doesn’t stop with coffee. As their name implies, tea is treated with equal reverence, offering everything from a ceremonial matcha affogato to expertly steeped loose-leaf varieties. And if you fall in love with what you’re drinking, you can grab a bag of their house roasted beans.

Dubbed by some as a “toy store for coffee lovers”, the atmosphere inside Infusion is a captivating blend of bohemian eclecticism and rustic wood. The space itself tells a story of devotion to the craft. One wall is adorned with a colorful mosaic of coffee mugs. While another wall displays the intricate parts of espresso machines like mechanical art. Woven together with pieces from coffee-producing regions, the decor creates an environment that is both worldly and welcoming.

This creates a dynamic, focused hub that buzzes with energy. As a testament to its world-class reputation, the cafe is often bustling, and finding a seat during peak hours can be a competitive sport. Parking out front can be equally challenging, but a pro tip for those in the know is to check the large alley with ample parking just behind the building. For a true peek behind the curtain, find the window looking into the dedicated lab. You might just witness the next generation of coffee masters at work.

While the price for specialty items may be higher than your average chain, you aren’t just buying a drink, you’re investing in an unparalleled experience crafted by some of the best in the business.
You can find this hub of coffee knowledge at 1300 E 8th Street, Tempe.

Tempe is home to many great cafes but few capture true coffee passion quite like Shaghf Cafe. Located just minutes from Arizona State University this cozy Middle Eastern inspired coffeehouse has quickly become a favorite hangout for locals, students and late night caffeine seekers alike.

The word “Shaghf” means passion and you can feel that in every sip and every detail of the experience. Shaghf is a story of craft and culture.

Owned and operated by local entrepreneur Hamza Rashid, Shaghf Cafe is one of the few U.S. locations of this globally renowned brand. Since taking ownership in 2024, Hamza has infused the Tempe location with authentic warmth and a creative local spirit. He’s often seen chatting with guests making everyone feel like part of the Shaghf family.

Listening to his community, Hamza recently expanded the menu to include freshly made sandwiches. This is the perfect companion to their already stellar coffee lineup. The star of the show however remains the signature Pistachio Frappe which is a creamy nutty masterpiece that’s quickly become an ASU legend.

The coffee beans are sourced from organic single origin beans grown in Guatemala’s Fraijanes region. It’s a high altitude volcanic terroir famed for its rich mineral soil and distinct flavor characteristics. The farm La Fatima supplies beans grown in volcanic pumice-rich soil at elevations around 1,400-1,800 meters where the active Volcán Pacaya periodically deposits ash and the climate brings abundant rainfall, cool winds and frequent mists.

For those who love slow coffee bar, Shaghf’s V60 pour-overs highlights lighter roasts that bring out nuanced flavors while espresso lovers will appreciate the cafe’s precise extractions and luxurious presentation. The company centrally controls its coffee bean roasting process at its main facility and ships freshly roasted beans to each of its locations around the world. This ensures consistent quality, flavor integrity, and freshness, allowing customers in Tempe to experience the same exceptional cup as coffee lovers abroad. It also means better control over roast profiles, ensuring each batch matches the intended flavor notes and brewing methods perfectly.

And then there’s the atmosphere… Cozy, modern and effortlessly inviting! It’s a place where you can study meet friends or unwind to live music. On most weekends you’ll find local artists performing or even a karaoke night in full swing making it one of Tempe’s go-to evening spots!

Did I mention the desserts? From delicate crepes to the viral Dubai chocolate every bite is crafted to match the café’s high standards of indulgence.

Best of all Shaghf Cafe is open late. A rarity where you can still grab an espresso or latte well after 11PM. Whether you’re a student pulling an all nighter a traveler exploring the city or a local craving something sweet and special Shaghf has your back.

Tucked inside the walkable and shady Tempe Business Center, Jasmine Jo Coffee & Flowers blends two worlds.... Fresh coffee and fresh blooms. The smell of espresso mixes with the scent of roses. It hits you the moment you walk in. Parking out front can be tricky during busy hours. But it is usually easier to find a good spot on the west side of the building which as a bonus leads right into a gorgeous back patio that feels like a secret garden. Big trees. Plenty of tables. Shade everywhere. It’s one of the nicest patios in Tempe in my humble opinion. Space inside can feel tight when busy but it is full of charm. The ambience feels cozy and European. It is the kind of spot where you can sip a drink and watch the world move slow. I’ve recently tried their Dirty Daisy which is a floral twist on coffee that’s smooth and enjoyable. On my last visit though, I ordered a latte with whole milk but got 2% or skim. Not ideal, but still good. Jasmine Jo usually pull espresso from single origin beans roasted by Matador Coffee Roasting Co. up in Flagstaff. That gives the drinks here a bright and clean taste. They used to have a slow bar for pour-overs back in the days when I came to Tempe more often and it made this place feel extra special. Sadly, that’s gone now. Manual brewing takes time and baristas have to keep orders moving fast. If you order an espresso-based drink, you're still in for a treat as it will be crafted on their beautiful Italian made Nuova Simonelli Appia II. Jasmine Jo also have a second shop in Ahwatukee Foothills. That one is more spacious but this Tempe location stays busier. It has more heart, more character, and a loyal crowd. If you love coffee and flowers, you will like this spot. It feels like a little escape in the middle of Tempe.
